Synopsis

Directed by Hiroshi Negishi (TENCHI MUYO, BURN UP W), the sci-fi anime series DIVERGENCE EVE imagines the future as a high-tech space opera marked by intergalactic space travel and well-endowed female peacekeepers. Sometime during the 21st century, humanity discovered a way to traverse the universe by slipping through portals that lead into parallel dimensions. Three hundred years later, space travel has become a safe, and even routine, event until an army of robot aliens known as Ghouls launches a series of attacks against the outpost portal Watcher's Nest--prompting the government to send in a group of busty, scantily clad police cadets to combat the alien menace. Brightly animated and playfully titillating, this collection presents the racy anime series in its entirety.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Average Show, 20 Nov 2009
By Mr. Se Evans (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Divergence Eve - The Complete Collection [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
I have quite the anime collection, but most of my shows are pretty dark: Berserk, Gantz, Elfen Lied, etc, so I wanted to brighten it up a bit. I'm open to most anime types and 'Divergence Eve' seemed like a pretty bright colourful show with plenty of fan service which I will get to in a minute, but that being said, the show is actually pretty dark and serious. I may be a little disappointed, but I was happy with the price! ;-)

Story: The story was a lil bit confusing for me and had me running in circles (in my mind). There were moments when I would think "What the hell just happened?" or "What the hell are they talking about?". OK, so maybe Sci Fi does tend to confuse me anyway, I'm not the brightest penny! But 'Divergence Eve' leaves you figuring out stuff by your self. The show can be quite boring sometimes, making me doze off, so maybe I missed something? Anyway, the story didn't interest me for long, sorry. Story 6/10

Fanservice:
Cute heavy ladies in space? OK, if I'm honest, this is probably the reason I wanted to watch the show and I think without it, the show would have been very boring lol. There's plenty of bounce and a lil bit of nudity, there are moments when the clothes would just rip off for no apparent reason other than to keep us interested, oh and every girl carries a large rack. But don't get me wrong, the show isn't all about big boobs.. Fanservice 8/10

Animation: I saw the trailer first and I liked the idea of mixing 2d & 3d animation, but I was somewhat disappointed. The animation reminds me of Sonic X... There are scenes (nude scenes) when the animation is actually pretty detailed and shiney, but most the time, the animation looks ugly with hardly any detail and not much detail on the backgrounds. OK, the 3d animation, it's cheesy and it's like watching an old playstation game, no joke! The action is really slow pace as well, the animation isn't awful, but it's just really average and I think since it's only a short series, the animation could have been a lot better. Animation 6/10

Music: The music is actually quite good, tho I think the end credits are a bit out of place considering it's a happy J-pop song, the main girl character is trying on different costumes, it's a bit random compared to the rest of the show lol. Music 8/10

Overall: It's an average show, it's not a bad anime but there is better anime out there. I'm watching the series again so I can get to grips with the story and there is another series based on this show called 'Misaki Chronicles'.

:-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for all tastes., 16 Nov 2009

In the future technology has enabled mankind to travel vast distances through space by opening holes in space/time. Due to an ovepopulated earth space colony watchers nest has been established as mankinds first foothold in space, unfortunately it is under constant attack from a mysterious alien entity called the ghoul that may have been unleashed due to the same tech that allows humans to travel through space. Into this comes misaki and several other recruits, brought to watchers nest to fight the ghoul and unwillingy participate in sinsister experiments conducted by the resident mad scientist.
To qualify the title of this review, this is an anime i enjoyed but others may not mainly because I got the impression no-one involved really knew what they wanted this anime to be. The main plot is pretty disturbing in tone, people go mad and/or die in horrible ways, others are being subjected to experiments without their knowledge and this could quite easily be a totally downbeat dystopian science fiction with strong horror elements along the lines of evangalion, blade runner or alien. Then someone decided to thrown in tons of fan service including plenty of comic relief breast jiggling and nudity. Now I know other anime have done this but never has it been so jarring, one really good example is the opening credits with dark guitar-based music that sets an ominous tone the episode progresses with dark dsytopian science fiction intersperced with boobs then a dark and sinister cliffhanger ending... suddenly it goes into the most cheery and out of place j-pop theme ever! I can pretty much guarentee this will more than likely alienate a significant portion of the shows audience, those wanting a show based on cute large-breasted girls in space fighting aliens will find it too dark, and those wanting serious sci-fi will get put off by the copious fan service that feels welded on. That said I enjoyed the show, at 13 episodes it really does not outstay its welcome and for the most part the characters are great plus fan service aside there is a pretty good plot in there! Also if you do find you enjoyed this there is another series called misaki chronicals Misaki Chronicles: Complete Collection [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] which shifts the tone a little and wraps up some loose ends in the story.
Overall, proceed with caution as the show has some pretty deep flaws, but its worth a gamble at the budget price in my humble opinion.

This is an unusual series i think, but is well made & has a good story. It can be a bit predictible, but is still good anime. Leans on cg a lot, but it's good all the same. Can be a little sad & down at times with the story, but i think, it leaves you wanting more.
