Product Description

Afro Samurai (Academy Award ® nominee Samuel L. Jackson) avenged his father and found a life of peace. But the legendary master is forced back into the game by a beautiful and deadly woman from his past. The sparks of violence dropped along Afros bloody path now burn out of control and nowhere are the flames of hatred more intense than in the eyes of Sio (Lucy Liu: Kill Bill). She wont quit until Afro is schooled in the brutal lessons he dealt those who stood in his way.  There is no such thing as final vengeance. The cycle of bloodshed spinning around the Number One Headband must roll on. Featuring the voice of Mark Hamill (Star Wars) and fresh production from The RZA (Wu-Tang Clan), the saga that began in the best-selling anime DVD of 2007 continues in AFRO SAMURAI: RESURRECTION.

Synopsis

PULP FICTION's Samuel L. Jackson once again brings his trademark cool to this feature-length animated sequel to the hip series. After having finally come to the end to the bloody trail he cut to avenge his father's murder, Afro (Jackson) can’t enjoy a life of peace for long before some of the collateral damage he left in his wake strikes back with her own brand of vengeance. Lucy Liu and Mark Hamill also lend their voiced to his strikingly animated mash-up of samurai life and hip-hop culture featuring the musical talents of RZA.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Samurai Action...Afro Style, 3 May 2009
By J. Snook "Ichigo_2020 - Anime Buff" (Wales) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Afro Samurai - Resurrection [2009] [DVD] (DVD)
Samuel L Jackson returns to the animated world once again to reprise his role as the super slick afro samurai. Afro's latest outing sees him stripped of his previously attained number 1 headband by a pair of vengeful friends from his past. The most notable additions to the cast this time round are none other than Star Wars legend Mark Hamill and ex Charlie's angel Lucy Liu. Lucy who voices the sexy antagonist Sio, bears a strong vendetta against the afro headed hero due to events that were shown in the original series. She's not alone though. Sio comes equipped with a sidekick teddybear, and not the cute stuffed kind either. Making a return to our screens is Afro's childhood friend turned nemesis, Jinno, who, due to severe injuries to his body, is now mainly composed of a mechanic body, and where's a bizarre teddy bear mask.

In a revenge fuelled attack, Sio steals the number 1 headband as well as the skull of Afro's dead father. With this she intends to resurrect Afro's late Dad (hence the name of the movie) and use him to her own advantage. This movie sees Afro restart his journey of searching for the headbands, but this time his motive isn't revenge, but more to uphold the honour of his father whom he respects deeply.

Like the original series, Afro Samurai provides some cutting edge action with plenty of gore and limbs flying around the place, as well as the usual bittersweet, and often tragic drama. Although the story to Afro Samurai Resurrection is relatively simple, it is the intertwining relationships and past experiences of the characters that make it so compelling to watch.

The unique and beautiful style of animation in Afro Samurai deserves a mention. The series has a very 'Frank Miller' style look with the main colour pallet being dull shades of grey and black, however, the redness of the blood and gore stands out the most and makes the film seem very violent and dark. The animation in this movie is done by legendary anime studio Gonzo who have worked on other titles such as Full Metal Panic, Gantz and Desert Punk. The films' unique look is paired up with a great soundtrack from the Wu Tang Clan's RZA. If you like hip hop music then you will like some of the tunes on offer in this film. It is made clear that the creators were pulling out all the stops, while making this flick. The style, look and feel of this anime shows that this is a well made, high budget film.

With the movie comes a nice selection of special features that include the making of the film, the making of the game, interviews, a commentary and more. If you have not yet seen Afro Samurai, you should definetly check out the original series than check out this full length movie. Afro Samurai resurrection is sure to be in the running for best anime release of of 2009, and it's sure to live on as a classic cult anime for many years to come. Long live the Afro.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'Afro Samurai' review, 23 Jun 2009
By L. P. Thomas "Kempy" (Aberystwyth, Wales) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Afro Samurai - Resurrection [2009] [DVD] (DVD)
Now i am a huge fan of Afro samurai. Not merely because of the conventions it breaks, the actors it uses or the high level of animation. I have to say it would be because it can seemlessly link high action and drama with the higher level of mystical happenings.
This new installment of Afro Samurai follows closely within this world. But a part of me is sad. It seems to end in such a fashio to kill it off.
An here is was hoping for much more.
(I'll just have to buy the PS3 game now!)
