Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

A BRAVIA LCD TV is no ordinary television. Design is sleeker, pictures are brighter, details clearer. All BRAVIA televisions are HD Ready as a minimum, with up to 4 HDMI connections, and come with an integrated digital tuner so there is no need for a set-top box to view Freeview TV and radio channels. Most of the BRAVIA LCD TVs feature BRAVIA Sync technology, it takes just one button to turn on your entire Sony home entertainment system, while XrossMediaBar helps you navigate your TV easily with its best-in-class menu screen. After all advanced technology should simply mean technology that does more for you.

Packed with the latest Sony technology, the BRAVIA V5500 lets you experience HD entertainment in all its glory. BRAVIA ENGINE 3 digital processing delivers excellent image quality, with vivid colours and sharper edges. It's DLNA-enabled, allowing it to become the hub of a home network of other compatible devices, so you can enjoy all your music, video and pictures on a whole new level. Meanwhile, a built-in USB Media Player enables you to connect other devices to your TV screen. Plus you can use the AppliCast™ feature to check on-screen RSS feeds of news and other information while you're watching your favourite programmes.

HD1080 gives you the ultimate standard of high definition

HD1080 gives you the ultimate
standard of high definition

HD1080 for cinema quality in your home

High Definition lets you enjoy home entertainment with stunning picture quality and sound. The BRAVIA V5500 goes way beyond the specification of an HD ready TV: its screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 can accept Full HD1080p/24p input signals with no downscaling. In a nutshell, the more pixels you have, the better the resolution, the finer the detail - and the more amazing the experience.

BRAVIA ENGINE 3 for the ultimate HD experience

An LCD television creates pictures by switching millions of pixels on and off. In the V5500 this process is controlled by the BRAVIA ENGINE 3, the latest version of Sony's advanced digital processing technology.

The unique technology of BRAVIA ENGINE 3 optimises the quality of every single scene
The unique technology of BRAVIA ENGINE 3
optimises the quality of every single scene
Using a collection of unique Sony algorithms it applies a digital perfecting process to reduce noise and produce cleaner images, higher contrast and smoother motion sequences, resulting in enhanced overall performance regardless of source.

Specifically, it analyses each individual scene, controlling the peak brightness level to generate advanced colour and brightness, and optimising the noise level. It also detects and adjusts the overall colour distribution of each frame and smoothes diagonal lines of pixels in fast-moving pictures to prevent jagged edges and bleeding colours.

In short, it delivers exceptional performance in every single scene.

Connect your home with DLNA

Create an entertainment network in your home with DLNA

Create an entertainment network
in your home with DLNA

The BRAVIA V5500 means you can finally create an easy-to-use home network that lets you share music, video and pictures from around the house on your TV. As part of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), Sony has adopted a universal standard for connectivity that enables your electronic devices, regardless of brand, to 'talk' to one another.

So now it's easy to move files between your TV, PC, printer, music player, phone, camera and more, wherever they are in the home. By integrating your TV into a home network, either wirelessly or via a cable, you can use your BRAVIA remote to find photos on the DLNA-enabled laptop in your bedroom and call them up to your living room TV screen. If you want hard copies, just send them to print on the colour printer in your spare room.

As well as BRAVIA TVs, Sony offers a range of DLNA Certified™ devices such as VAIO notebooks, the Sony Ericsson mobile phone, the PLAYSTATION®3 and the GigaJuke hard-disc drive music system.

More ways to enjoy photos, videos and music with the USB Media Player

The BRAVIA V5500 also comes with a built-in USB Media Player that means you can connect devices directly to your TV. Content from your USB device is transferred directly to your BRAVIA TV, so you can listen to songs, see a slideshow of your favourite pictures or your latest home video clips.

AppliCast™ brings live internet feeds to your screen while you watch TV

AppliCast™ brings live internet feeds to
your screen while you watch TV
AppliCast™ keeps you in touch while you watch

AppliCast™ lets you see internet information on your BRAVIA TV while you're watching television. You don't have to switch on your PC - just call up widgets onto the TV screen. Three widgets, including a clock and calendar, are already installed on the on-screen XrossMediaBar and you can add RSS feeds of news, weather and more by connecting your TV to the internet via the Ethernet port at the back. Just select the information you want with your BRAVIA remote and it's right there whenever you need it.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Review, 8 Oct 2009
By Mr. A. N. Harris "Chad" (Wales) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sony Bravia KDL37V5500U 37-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Freeview (Electronics)
This a great TV with fairly accurate industry standard pictures in "theatre" mode.
The other settings are too glarish and colours exaggerated compared to D65 standards.
In "theatre" mode I reccomemnd setting backlight setting to 3, increasing the brightness by 1-2 and lowering the contrast by a few clicks, you shall come broadly close to D65 standards, either that or buy Digital Video Essentials HD to calibrate your TV.

Th reason I chose the V model instead of the W is because the V has no 100hz, which can cause input lack in games even with it off. With this model I did not notice any input lag whether I was in "game" (glarish colours) or "theatre" mode.

100hz is supposed to improve the flow of motion but can cause the image to look processed, some like it some dont.
If you are primary using this TV for gaming then save some cash and go for the V model. However, wathching films ins SD and HD is still a great experience since the processing here is superb already, you wont be dissappointed.

Most reviews I read seem to suggest the 42" and above screen sizes has un-even back lighting with pools of minor whites (lighter blacks) appearing in darken scenes. However the 37" do not have this problem with backlight setting to 2/3.

Sound Wise it is clear and should be adequate for all but the sound freaks.

I bought this HDTV primary for the PS3 and as such it is my first ever HDTV.
I recommend you buy a decent hdmi cable for build quality like XO platinum, dont bother spending over £20 for one though it wouldnt make a difference.

All in all a superb buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy, simple setup!!, 22 Jun 2009

This review is from: Sony Bravia KDL37V5500U 37-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Freeview (Electronics)
Was really pleased with this product, from delivery to setting it up. The TV arrived within two days and in perfect condition. Setting up freeview took about 20mins, and was simple enough to do without the user manual. Picture is fantastic and sound crystal clear. When using my Sony Blu-ray player the picture is out of this world!!!
It is best to keep the TV on standby after setting up your freeview as I found out when i switched the TV of at the mains, and had to set the freeview up again. Apart from that great buy! worth every penny! I am a very happy customer!!

I'll make this short and sweet ,this TV for me is as good as it gets. The SD freeview is the best I have ever seen and the HD picture quality is totally stunning. Also there is plenty of adjustment to get the picture to your own personal preference.
