BBC Review

For reasons that have evaded yours truly, this South London five-piece are named after the 'outsider art' movement, and spuriously bracketed by some sections of the rock press with frankly more interesting 'art wave' bands such as Franz Ferdinand. Their third album continues to showcase a self-consciously adolescent brand of humour that hinges on substance abuse, rock namedropping and embarrassing shagging scenarios. You'll either love 'em or hate 'em.

The most distinctive thing about Art Brut is also the most annoying - impressively eyebrowed vocalist Eddie Argos, who talks (literally) a lot but doesn't say much in his clever-clever spoken-word spiels. These occasionally stray into 'ironically' out-of-tune, half-sung choruses, often repeated a

good deal more than they should be. And then some.

Art Brut vs Satan is book-ended by gratuitous tales of alcohol (Alcoholics Unanimous) and drug-fuelled (Mysterious Bruises) excess. The Passenger lets us know that Argos is really, really (actually not really) into public transport while making a 'sly' reference to a far better song by Iggy Pop.

There are more such rock references on Slap Dash For No Cash, The Replacements and Twist And Shout. And Summer Job reflects on what Argos was possibly doing before Art Brut and may well be doing again quite soon.

The musical accompaniment is mostly limited to perfunctory (and surprisingly artless) buzz-saw indie guitar pop and boasts a production credit by Black Francis, but don't expect anything as dynamic or groundbreaking as his work with Pixies.

Comedy may have been the new rock 'n' roll fifteen years ago, but rock and comedy just don't mix very well - unless you're Flight of the Conchords - the problem generally being that after one listen, That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore. (Get it? Oh, just Google it!) Another problem Art Brut have is that their songs generally aren't funny the first time around. Sorry, guys - nil points, thumbs down. Give me Satan any day. They say (s)he has all the best tunes and on the evidence of this, they may just be right. --Jon Lusk

CD Description

Produced by former Pixies' frontman Frank Black, 'Art Brut Vs Satan' is the band's third album. While not a huge departure from the band's debut effort, 'Bang Bang Rock 'n' Roll',it is very different from the commercial production of their last record, 'It's A Bit Complicated'. The 'Satan' featured in the title is front-man Eddie Argos' impression of the record-buying public, following the band being dropped by their label EMI, while lyrical themes veer between adolescent love and Argos' rage at the record industry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Art Brut 1 Satan 0, 3 May 2009
By secondalibi (Birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Art Brut vs. Satan (Audio CD)
Eddie Argos and co are back with a new album 'Art Brut Vs satan'. Although it lacks the killer punch of some of the bands earlier work, it is still far more interesting that what some other bands are currently producing. Frank Black (The Pixies) produced this and to be honest a lot of his work gets lost and goes largely un-noticed. First single 'Alcoholics Unanimous' hits the spot instantly and sounds like classic Art Brut. What follows takes time to get used to and nothing really jumps out and grabs you. However, after a few listens the whole thing starts to work its magic. The absolute highlight of the album for me is the final track 'Mysterious Bruises' which might just be the best thing that Art Brut have ever produced, stunning. On the whole this is great, maybe not as catchy as the first 2 albums, but great all the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art Brut - Top Of The Pops, 26 April 2009

The best band in Britain once again produce a highly entertaining album of well observed vignettes all powered along by some killer riffs and funktastic bass and drums. Art Brut - Britain needs you more than ever, they just don't realize it yet. "I'm in love with a girl / In my comic shop / She's a girl that likes comics / She probably gets out a lot!" Like to see Johnny Borrell come up with something as good as that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to their best, 25 Mar 2009

Art Brut did a fantastic first album that has been near the top of my album collection since its debut. "It's a bit complicated" had it's moments but I couldn't listen to it all the way through after the first few listens and sank to the bottom of the pile.

However, when "Art Brut Vs. Satan" landed I thought I'd give them another go and I am glad I did! This is a great album with some fantastic lyrics.

Eddie Argos is back on form and I will try and catch them if they come around here on their tour.

Bravo!
