a good start, 19 Jan 2010
This review is from: Law & Order: UK - Series 1 [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
"In the Criminal Justice system the people are represented by two separate but equally important groups: the Police who investigate the crimes; and the Crown Prosecutors who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories".
This was the first series in the UK series of Law and Order. It contains 7 episodes over 2 discs.
1. Care
2. Unloved
3. Vice
4. Unsafe
5. Buried
6. Paradise
7. Alesha
The "Law" consists of: Ronnie Brooks (Bradley Walsh), Matt Devlin (Jamie Bamber) and their boss Natalie Chandler (Harriet Walter); the "Order" are James Steel (Ben Daniels), Alesha Phillips (Freema Agyeman) and their boss George Castle (Bill Patterson).
There are several Extras:-
DISC 1 - Alternative beginning, Commentary for episode 1, Deleted scenes for episode 1, 2 and 3; alternative summing up for episode 3.
DISC 2 - Interviews with: Dick Wolf (2 minutes 49 seconds), Bradley Walsh (3m 15s), Jamie Bamber (3m 40s) and Chris Chibnall (4m 10s); Tour of the CPS set and deleted scenes from episode 6.
As I started watching the programmes an overwhelming feeling that I has seen them before - this was strange as I missed this series when it was shown on TV, because I was in hospital, which was why I decided to get the DVDs when they came out. Then it dawned on me - they were simply the US stories refilmed in London. It was a bit of a surprise as I thought that the franchise owner Dick Wolf would have had more sense.
Did Mr Wolf really think that fans of the US series wouldn't recognise the stories?
One thing which truly annoyed me was the camera work (especially on episode one) the camera wobbled and bounced about, especially on the "walking" scenes - so much that I was distracted from story. This bouncing about is something that the US series have managed to avoid; after all the idea of the steady-cam was that the viewer travelled with the characters as they move smoothly without getting motion sickness.
Worst of all the sins - there are NO SUBTITLES - which is appalling.
After saying all that I still enjoyed the series and will look forward to the next season, with the hope that we might get some original stories. This is a good light entertainment series, taken as that I found it thoroughly enjoyable.

Give it a chance!, 10 Jun 2009
This review is from: Law & Order: UK - Series 1 [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
Firstly, to those people complaining about how the stories in this series are the same as ones in the original american show - that's delibrate not a coincidence! If you actually go and read about the making of the show you'll find that Dick Wolf, Chris Chibnall and Richard Stokes went through old series and picked out specific episodes they thought would translate well in a British setting, but leaving the plot the same. I don't see anything wrong with this, though since I've never watched the original series perhaps I am viewing Law and Order: UK with less expectation than others.
Personally I have throughly enjoyed the series so far (7 episodes) and look forward to the showing of the remaining 6. The acting is generally good, particularly within the partnerships of Brookes and Devlin and Steel and Philips. The characters are believable and easy to empathise with and the scripts/plots certainly match up in quality with other crime dramas we are given in this country.
If I had any criticism at all it would be that some of the episodes do feel a little rushed and would benefit from a bit more detail, but on the whole I would definitely recommend this as a decent hours entertainment.

I like it!, 4 Feb 2010
This review is from: Law & Order: UK - Series 1 [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
I stopped watching the US Law and Order after they killed off Claire. That was a long time ago. I loved the original cast members and the way they worked together. I never tried watching the spin-offs--like CSI, the original, to me, is the best. I lived in NY--the stories were from NY (the tagline used to be something about them being pulled from the headlines), and having them set in NY brought a familiarity to me that other crime shows don't.
When I saw there was a a Law and Order UK, I was thrilled. I recognized the actors from other UK productions (and Jamie from BSG), and sat to watch, in anticipation. I was not disappointed. Sure, the settings are different, and I didn't recognize all the story lines--I looked up the original titles, online, to remind myself about the US episodes. But, the episodes did a good job of it, and I hope there will be more. I've seen all 13 episodes now and hope there are more to come.
Are they as good as the originals? It's been a long time so I can't make that comparison, fairly. But, they were good enough for me to want more :)
