Product Description

CD Description
An hour-long vocal and instrumental suite by the Scottish multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer John McCusker, performed by a dozen of Britain’s finest musicians. The suite sets out to explore and interweave the many different traditions, genres and influences at work across today’s dynamic UK folk scene.

Bringing together an array of established and emerging talent from both sides of the border, McCusker’s hand-picked ensemble includes Blur co-founder Graham Coxon, Idlewild vocalist Roddy Woomble and acclaimed Gaelic songstress Julie Fowlis. Revered balladeer John Tams and rising star Jim Causley also feature among the singers. McCusker himself heads a crème-de-la-crème instrumental line-up of Andy Cutting (diatonic accordion), Ian Carr (guitar), Emma Reid (fiddle), Iain MacDonald (bagpipes/whistles/flute), Ewen Vernal (bass) and James Mackintosh (percussion). Within McCusker’s compositional framework, each musician has been encouraged to contribute to the music’s development and arrangements, infusing them with a vibrant collaborative spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed he didn't win at the folk awards, 12 Feb 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
After an epic BBC2 folk awards (believe me all the winners were deserved) I was just a bit sorry that John didn't pick up a gong this year. I only hope that this album is eligble for next year because it epitomises everything that is good about modern British folk, excellent musicianship, a true blend of traditional and modern and perhaps the ultimate compliment, would be equally suited to be played as background music at a dinner party or to be listened to with intent as you can just lose yourself in the melodies and rhythms of thoroughly modern "traditional" music. And he's got an "A" list set of pals as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Modern Folk Music's finest hours *****, 3 Feb 2009

John McCusker - Under One Sky
(30/1/09)

The Sun

****1/2 stars
The four winds have long blown folk music in from all corners of British isles.

But rarely has an album reflected its differing geographical roots as effectively as this hour-long suite by Scots luminary John McCusker.

He's done it by collaborating with a variety of musicians, including Blur's Graham Coxon, Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake and Idlewild's Roddy Woomble.

Another contributor is Hebridean singer Julie Fowlis whose haunting Gaelic infuses the 15-minute `S Tusa Thileas with beauty and longing. Against a backdrop of fiddles, whistles, accordions, this is one of modern folk music's finest hours.

The Guardian, - **** stars
The folk world is getting bolder. Artists are getting involved in all sorts of concept works, from Richard Thompson's gloriously brave 1,000 Years of Popular Music to the multimedia experiments of The Imagined Village. Now comes an hour-long vocal and instrumental folk suite from the Scottish fiddle-player, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer John McCusker. He already has an impressive history, having worked with the Battlefield Band for years before moving on to produce Kate Rusby and tour with Mark Knopfler. For this confident and melodic new work, he is joined by a cast that includes Julie Fowlis and Graham Coxon. It consists of just seven tracks, but each one has a variety of themes - from grand Celtic instrumental passages, with the fiddle matched against pipes or accordion, through to sturdy, more English-influenced ballads. There's even a series of jigs. Coxon's All Has Gone sits a little uneasily in all this, thanks to his laid-back vocals, but then in comes McCusker's fiddle to transform the song.
