5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Printer, 15 May 2009
By Kevin F. Dyas "kevdyas" (Grimsby, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this all in one printer after seeing the television adverts promoting cost savings on ink, although I wasn't specifically looking for a new printer, my Hewlett Packard All-in-One was getting a little dated and as HP didn't update the drivers for Windows Vista to incorporate the fax facility and advanced scanning features I thought it was time for a change. While the Kodak is a bit more on the expensive side, I print quite a bit so hope to recoup the additional outlay in savings on consumables and from my use so far this is proving so.

To those in the know, Kodak is a relative newcomer to the all-in-one/printer market however they haven't disappointed! The ink is readily available from a vast amount of stockists in addition to Kodak's own website who have quite a few special offers on and have a wide variety of stock.

First thoughts of the printer is how pleasing it is on the eye, the black looks classy and once you've managed to remove all of the orange tape they use for shipping and get it plugged in, the blue LEDs make it look even better. The printer is on the whole well built although I think that the tray which holds the A4 paper could be a little sturdier. The touch pad on the front of the unit is easy to use and operates well, the LCD screen gives a visual representation of how much ink you have remaining and once connected up also confirms the strength of the wireless signal if you choose this method of connecting the printer. There is a LED on the panel for both WiFi and Ethernet depending on which method you choose (there is of course USB too), Alternatively you can connect a Pictbridge compatible digital camera or print pictures via Bluetooth using the optional dongle (available seperately).

Setting up the printer is a straight forward affair, personally, I downloaded the software from the internet however even when using the installation CD it checks the internet to ensure you're using the most up to date software, I chose to connect my printer using WiFi which was easy and works well, it also means that you're not tied to keeping the unit close to your computer.

I have utilised the printer to produce a wide variety of documents and has achieved excellent results, printing is generally quick and sharp, the software allows you to select different settings to make best use of your ink sure as draft printing etc. One of the down falls of the printer is that the tray which holds the printed documents doesn't have a very high catcher (thing!) so when the printer spits the completed documents out, once it has done a couple of pages the paper goes shooting off the end and in my case, onto the floor!
The unit performs incredibly well when printing photographs and for those cost conscious people, Kodak have some photo value packs available, both of these include a Colour cartridge and for £12.49 gets you 180 sheets of Kodak's 6x4 3-star photo paper while £13.49 gets you 135 sheets of 6x4 4-star Premium photo paper. The latter obviously produces the best photos out of the two however the 3-star paper is more than adequate for everyday prints. For those really special moments, Kodak offer a top grade 5-star Ultra Premium photo paper which produces superb quality prints. Kodak's own paper does of course produce the best prints on the printer, I did try some paper from my local pound shop and you could really tell particularly as the ink just pooled on the paper whereas the Kodak paper was immediately dry after printing. Kodak paper has a code on the reverse of the page which the printer reads and optimises the settings for best results, all of the papers are available in a variety of finishes.

Scanning is also very easy to do with various options and settings to achieve the best results from your original copy, if you're scanning photographs something I think is quite clever is that you can lay several images on the glass, scan them the software will select each individual picture and if you wish, save them with different file names as separate images - no more scanning of one picture then having the put another one on.
The software has a wide variety of options including colour restoration, quality settings and Kodak's own Perfect Touch option.
A feature my previous printer didn't have is an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and is something I have found incredibly useful as it whizzes the documents through, scans it and collects it in the tray, once completed you can opt to save in a variety of formats including PDF ready to send on e-mail. You can also take advantage of the ADF for faxing or scanning multiple page documents.

Copying and faxing is also just as easy, these features can be performed independently of a computer, the LCD Screen and Touch panel shows the various selections on quality, colour or black and white only and how many copies you would like then you can leave it to it.
The fax facility allows you to store speed dial numbers for those you use frequently, something my previous HP All-in-One did but the Kodak doesn't (or if it does I haven't found the option!) is listen on the line for a fax tone particularly in the case of using an answering machine on the line, the Kodak also requires you to press the `Start' button if you answer an incoming fax call whereas the HP needed you to dial 123 and it would pick up the call.

Overall, the printer is pleasing on the eye and produces some excellent prints, with Kodak's value packs it offers cheap photographs and for documents the minimal cost of ink makes the printer affordable to use. It does fall a little short on the fax features I am used to but as I don't receive faxes too often I cannot imagine it causing too much of an impact. I am very pleased with the purchase, I only hope that Kodak's business model of the higher purchase price Vs lower priced consumables continues to work as it goes against the grain of today's purchases of purchase the hardware cheap but pay through the nose on consumables - think shaving razors?

2.0 out of 5 stars OK for text, 20 Jun 2009
By Mrs. J. Walker - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I just installed my (Amazon supplied - good service as usual) Kodak ESP9 printer. At first I tried to install it using an ethernet cable for speed purposes. Three hours later after a chat session with Kodak, it worked. The installation software is unable to cope with Norton 360 firewalls and needs manual intervention to do so. To be fair, it does give you a link to a similar version of Norton.
I then successfully installed it using USB, which was no problem, and also using wifi - just typed in the network key and away it went.
Since then I have tested it fairly exhaustively, and have decided the following:

1. Software - Right click on a file, select print, and Windows pops up a program that will only print the photo on photo paper from the top tray. If you want to print on normal paper, you have to select the Kodak print program, which is not very good, as it default prints in one corner right up to the edge of the paper. Photo software is primitive and uses 200meg of disk space. Called Easyshare software and Kodak AOI Home centre depending where you look,I tried to download Easyshare software, thinking it was different to what was installed - but it was not, and the installation program crashed, so I had to repair it from add remove programs.

2. Hardware - very heavy to lift. Plastic average to good, though flimsy in parts. Control panel easy to use and well lit. Paper Out tray is none existant. Don't stand in line with it or you may get cut in half! If you are printing multi-page documents, be prepared to stand at the printer and collect each page by hand - or spend an age collecting them off the floor. I made the mistake of printing part of the the manual from my lap top in a another room - what a paper chase. The serial number is underneath the printer, so if you need to read it (for registration purposes, or on the help chat line) make sure that first you remove all paper from the trays - or you get an almighty paper jam the first time you try to print. The ESD9 reads cards from its card reader very well, but would not read from my Cannon 350D using the USB input. The scanner function works well, especially the multi page reader, which can handle about 6 pages at a time. It gives a warning about possible paper jams every time that it is used. I suspect that if you get a jam at this location, it would need to be returned to base to fix. It does not allow the scanning of photographic slides, so I will have to retain my existing scanner. The supplied OCR software is difficult to use, but the scanner can be easily linked to my extisting software, so that is no problem.

Printing on both sides of the paqe works fine in manual mode, but not if you use the automatic mode. Flip them on the short side and alternate pages are upside down. Flip them on the long side it seems to make no difference. After half an hour and lots of pages later I gave up trying and decided to use the manual method.

3. Photo quality - nowhere near as good as my six year old HP 960c printer. Colours are not at all vivid, but if you just want a picture to hand to a friend it will do. Quite quick if you use the top paper tray. Don't use this printer if you are entering a photo competition!

4. Speed - difficult to tell, but it does not seem to be up to its spec.

5. Faxing - not tried yet, as the phone socket is withion reach, but the cable on my phone will not reach the printer, which due to its size I have had to install in another location.

6. Web help - basic with no forums. FAQs page has links only at the top of the page, making it essential to scroll back to the top to view the next page. Help ratings no us at all.

Overall - It could be cheaper to run that my HP, but best used for draft print jobs. I bought it because my HP colour cartridges are over £50 each. Seems that I will still have to retain my old printer for colour printing in quality, and my scanner for photos. As is often the case, items designed for multi purposes are not as good as single purpose items.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kodak printer 3 in 1 with Fax esp9, 23 Mar 2009
By Malcolm Parry (Liverpool England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Excellent price - swift delivery - overall very good printer but unfortunately cannot send fax's - despite help from Kodak (you get through to South Africa) could not fix and agreed to replace albeit with a refurbished model (yes refurbished) They were told I did not buy as refurbished and as only 2 weeks old expected a new one. Kodak could not deal so back to Amazon who dealt with it all first class (firstly in Manilla and then in Cork - you do get around the world making phone calls today do you not). Amazon have dispatched a new one and allowed extra time to send faulty one back in case delivery of new one was delayed. Well done Amazon
