Synopsis

A festive double feature. An unlucky boy named Santa who happens to be born on Christmas Eve has it tough... He feels like he falls between the cracks of everyone's holiday happiness, and even his parents don't seem to care! There might not be any mistletoe, but good cheer comes down the chimney with a kiss from the crazy young Santa-in-Training named Mai! She has been sent to show sad-sack Santa the true joy of the season. And if he can quit acting like a bummed-out bump on the Yule log long enough to surrender to her considerable charms, the festive fireworks between the two might be hot enough to light up the tree!

2.0 out of 5 stars This is a no laughing matter, 11 Dec 2008
This review is from: Always My Santa [DVD] (DVD)
Do yourself a favour & not waste money purchasing this DVD. All I can say is this isn't as funny as it looks.

From the trailer I saw, it looks quite promising, but when actually watching the 2 full eps., it was a bitter disappointment.

The story is about a teenage boy (who's ironically called Santa - but has no relation to Father Christmas) who's like 'The Grinch'; always alone during the festive season & never quite enjoys it like any average person. Then comes Mai, now she IS Santa (well, a Santa in training) trying her best to cheer him up, then they have a little spark which in the 2nd eps. focuses mainly on.

The problem is the plot (the way it's shown) is waaay too confusing or certain scenes doesn't make any logical sense. E.g. Santa doesn't believe that Mai is THE Santa, but somehow it never occurred to him that Mai can do extraodinary magic like appearing from nowhere, or able to whip out a changing booth from thin air. I know this is a comedy anime, but lets be a little realistic with the characters observation/intelligence of something that is so abnormal.

Plus, in the 1st few mins, it looks more like a trailer than an actual eps., as everything moves so quickly (1 scene to another) at points, you feel "Did I miss something?"

The 2nd eps. introduces Mai's sister & her former best friend, Sharry. Like I said before, this eps. focuses mainly on Santa & Mai's developing relationship...so I thought. Cuz at times it doesn't really link to where eps. 1 left off, cuz Santa seemingly show no love-interest to Mai (less than in eps. 1)

Speaking of comedy, this by all means not the best, I can guarantee you'll chuckle at a few scenes but that's it. It's no 'School Rumble'...what's more, the 2nd eps. just recycled the jokes from eps. 1 e.g. Mai say something to Santa that sounds very dirty from passerby's point of view, but she blames Santa for it, like he's the 1 who suggested it.

This DVD is rated 15 due to the fact there's female nudity (you know, the chest & the rear), but apart from that & maybe some minor violence, I see no reason why the certificate is rated that high, as EVERYTHING in the 2eps. is seemingly aimed at kids.
