Product Description

CD Description

In an unusual move for an established country singer, Brad Paisley's PLAY is a primarily instrumental album that puts its focus entirely on Paisley's underrated guitar work. Far from being a traditional country album, or even a contemporary country-pop album, PLAY works in a wide variety of genres, including Les Paul-style jazz, ripping surf rock, old-fashioned electric Chicago blues, and metal-tinged rock & roll.
Paisley also assembles quite a list of guest stars: a re-recording of an early hit features a guest appearance by the actor Andy Griffith, while the Bakersfield country rocker "Come On In" features the late Buck Owens and a bluesy take on"Let the Good Times Roll" welcomes B.B. King. Two vocal tracks, "Start A Band" and "More Than Just This Song", feature Keith Urban and Steve Warriner, respectively, while the epic"Cluster Pluck" is a tongue-in-cheek high-speed dash through the history of country guitar showcasing James Burton, Vince Gill, Albert Lee, and four other guitarists besides. PLAYis a detour, but a worthwhile one.

4.0 out of 5 stars What's this bloke doing playing country?, 29 Dec 2008
By Spartacus (Isle of Man) - See all my reviews
First off, I have to state that I'm not an admirer of country music at all- far too depressing for my ears, and I loathe ballads. That being said, I was given this a a Christmas present as it has a picture of a guitar on the cover, and I play one, so it would be poor manners not to at least give it a listen.

It would be an understatement to say that I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed; yes, there are some slow numbers on it I'm afraid (hence the four stars only), but not many. As for the remainder, trust me, this bloke can really play. In fact, he's the most dynamic guitarist I've heard in long while, the slides, bends, trills, harmonics and fills come at you in an avalanche, and I was quite disappointed when the album finished. So much so that I immediately played it again. The track "Start a Band" could have been taken from my own thoughts as a youngster.

So if, like me, your abiding memories of country remain being subjected to your dads hideous collection of Jim Reves, Bobby Bare, et al, give this a go. I assure you, you won't regret it. Nashville, this bloke isn't. Very impressed and pleased that I've got it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guitar Album, 30 Mar 2009
By A. Hunter (UK) - See all my reviews

The playing on this album is superb with loads of famous guest guitar players and great tunes. Unlike other Brad Paisley albums this one isn't just for Country fans but will appeal to anybody who loves electric guitars, (particularly Telecasters), played well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome record !!!, 25 Nov 2008
By Bert Heynderickx (Lembeke, Belgium) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is just an amazing record. Brad has incredible talent and masters a lot of different music styles; not just country. It is indeed a 'different' record with mostly instrumental tracks, but he pulls it off perfectly. This is as good as it gets. Congrats, Brad! ( too bad the cd-cover design is as ugly as it gets ;-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Brad wanted to do it.
The average Brad Paisley album is chock full of humour, superb musicianship and upbeat and slow tempo songs. This is something slightly different. Read more
