Product Description

Product Description

Eco-eye has a full range of functions which make it highly competitive in the field of real-time electricity monitoring. A particular strength is that its design makes it extremely user-friendly to program and operate. With these facts in mind I am sure eco-eye will appeal to everyone. Key Features: Eco-eye comprises of a wireless sender unit which attaches to any live cable (usually at the meter) and a display unit which can be wall-mounted, freestanding or portable. The large display unit is easier to read than those on similar products. Cost of supply can be analysed by hour, day, week, month or year. Functionality and programmability has been designed with ease of use and simplicity in mind. Display options: Kilowatts, £s, (? and $ versions are software options), CO2 emissions - shown by either hour, day, week, month or year - also has a 24 hour clock display option. Memory function - has the ability to check historical usage & CO2 emissions on a week-by-week basis and cost comparisons by the hour, day, week, and month. Real-time readings update every 4 seconds or 30 seconds (power save option) Uses 4 AA batteries or can be used with the optional AC power adapters - energy efficient; uses negligible electricity to operate. Estimated battery life is around six months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neat Gizmo!, 23 Sep 2008

This review is from: Energy Saving Eco-Eye Eco Eye Ecoeye Elite Wireless Power Electricity Smart Monitor Meter Eco Friendly
I have had an Eco Eye Elite for a few months. Fascinating! I wanted to know how much electricity my house was using because I am thinking about getting a windmill. I use the Eco-Eye to tell me what my electricity consumption is from minute to minute. I have the Eco-Eye on top of the TV so I can see it all the time. The biggest surprise was the pump on my gas central heating boiler, I had never thought of that using electricity but it uses about 250 watts continuously like the fridge and the fridge/freezer. Between them these three are the base load of the house. The 9kw shower is just a spike and not significant. As for the appliances on standby, they don't even register!

The technical details: the Eco Eye has two parts basically the transmitter fits on the mains wire as it comes into the fuse box and transmits details of the electricity coming through the wire. It uses wireless to send to the display unit. Very simple, it either works or it doesn't. You do have to keep feeding it batteries, my wife says they cost more than any money it saves on electricity! She is right!

Bought this device about 4 weeks ago an have the following feedback:-
Installation:-
Installation is very easy however I recommend that you read the supplied manual as installing it incorrectly will result in bad or no readings. Batteries are included and require installation before the units will function. The unit has two separate parts.. A induction loop + sender unit which should be attached to the main power line before it enters the fuse box. The induction loop is designed to be larger than the cable it monitors so fitting it is easy enough. The sender unit is very light so I opted to put it on top of my electrical meter in the external "white box" of our house.

The Receiver is the device seen in the product pictures and it (as the name indicates) receives the signal from the sender which is installed on your main power line.

Installation of the equipment took a couple of minutes, however setting the clock and other settings did require reading the manual and whilst wasn't hard it wasn't great.

Unit functions correctly and I recommend taking a notebook and going around the house turning things off and on until you have a good idea of what everything costs. The most useful feature of the unit is the electrical usage with is expressed as killo watt hours. This is displayed in 3 inch high LCD digits and is extremely easy to read from anywhere in the room.

However this unit also records historical data and this is where I think its flawed. It cycle through the other displayable data you simply press the green button on the front of the unit and then scroll though the historic data using the two purple arrow keys. Sadly whilst this data is useful its not IMHO very intuitive. I would have preferred a graph or a table of historical data on a single screen.

Conclusion
The unit is extremely easy to install and the large digit display makes it extremely easy to read however with hindsight I would probably buy a cheaper unit (without historical data) as the KWH reading is the essential part.
