This is the third volume of the 'Desert Blues' series, which the compilers justifiably claim has contributed to our increasing fascination with the genre over recent years.
Back in 2002, when the first volume came out, Tinariwen, Amadou & Mariam and Toumani Diabate (all represented) were virtually unknown here. Some new names, and a widening of the net to include the Ethiopian jazz of Getatchew Mekurya and the orchestrated rai of Khaled, make this double CD both a strong introduction for the newly intrigued, and substantial enough to please those who have already got their feet sandy. --Howard Male, Independent on Sunday

When Christian Scholze and Jean Trouillet released their first double album on the music of the Sahara, they set a ball rolling which has been gathering speed ever since: "desert blues" is now an established genre and hugely in vogue. This third volume brings together all the griots who have become synonymous with the music, plus the best-loved musicians on the international circuit, as well as less familiar names. Thus Djelimady Tounkara, Ali Farka Toure, Oumou Sangare, Toumani Diabate and Habib Koite sit alongside the experimental Algerian songstress Souad Massi, the blind duo Amadou & Mariam, and those ubiquitous Touaregs, Tinariwen. Rokia Traore duets with the Kronos Quartet, while Khaled takes another bow. (5 stars) --Michael Church, The Scotsman, 16th May 2008
