5.0 out of 5 stars I Lied, 17 Aug 2007
By M. Brewster "markboro1974" (Manchester UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Our Ill Wills (Audio CD)
Earlier today I wrote a review about the new UNKLE album, in that review I said that there had been three great albums this year. I Lied!
This is up there with them, so make that four great albums.
Words cannot describe this album, it is sublime, the lyrics, the way it is produced and most of all the voice behind it all.
If you haven't got this album, buy it and while you are at it buy their first 'Howl Howl Gaff Gaff'.
Listen to Howl Howl Gaff Gaff first and then this.
It just all makes sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fall In Love With This Band, Please, Please, Please, 18 May 2008
By pjr (London, England) - See all my reviews
For an area with quite sparse population the whole of Scandinavia seems to produce an awful lot of music whilst Sweden itself really does seem to tip the balance even further. There seems to be about one new band a week appearing and most are ridiculously good. All the more remarkable then, this is the second release from Shout Out Louds.

This second album takes the blueprint of the first and expands the sound considerably. Their first, "Our Ill Wills", was a tight small scale affair with enough gentle jangle to put a smile on the most hardhearted of faces. The fact that there were also some joyously catchy tunes gave the album some potential for the charts. It didn't come.

For the second album there is a much bigger sound. Seeminly drenched in reverbs guitars are joined with strings and piano to produce a totally different mood. Whereas the first album echoed a kind of Swedish Kooks, reminding you of the brighter days of Britpop, this is a much bigger affair. There is something altogether more epic about "Tonight I Have To Leave It" and "You Are Everything".

The strings and piano flesh out everything here in a way which makes Adam Olenius' voice sound even more heartbroken. It's the driving force of the record, a voice seemingly made for this glacially beautiful setting. Backed effectively by Bebban Stenborg's cool vocals on "Impossible" at times this record really does have a better dynamic and is a major development for the band. This time around there is a beautiful melancoly in evidence.

In a perfect world you would have probably had this last year but their original record label seem curiously disinterested in promoting this band. Consequently about 9+ months have passed since this album's release in their homeland, and 6 since it came out in North America. It seems the epic proportions are not well thought of here and so it finally arrives late and from a different label who are unlikely to be able to place this record in the kind of spotlight it so richly deserves. Which when you consider the quality of this record is, frankly, criminal.

If you've ever been faintly seduced by Scandinavian indie pop then this is unlikely to disappoint you. Although probably not as instantly loveable as their debut, this is an album which grows into a richly rewarding pleasure. Another gem from Northern Europe and one which deserves to be far more than something lovely found in a bargin bin.
