Johnny Cash was a passionate man but the country star was particularly interested with the downtrodden. Prisoners. Though playing shows in prisons was not unusual to Johnny (San Quentin, Folsom State Prison) - he had never performed at a prison outside the U.S.A. when he took the stage at 1:10 p.m. on October 3, 1972 at Österåker Prison north of Stockholm, Sweden.
He opened with A Boy Named Sue for a fully-seated auditorium & for the next hour plus continued with some of his biggest hits & fan favorites. To commemorate the day, Johnny had learned a few Swedish words: "Thank you my friends, I hope you like our music."
Now, finally uncovered after 35 years in the vaults, is Johnny Cash - Live At Österåker Prison. Expanded with new liner notes, remastered with 12 bonus tracks - brought to you by the man who walked the line.

Although he'd never been inside himself, country legend Johnny Cash was always passionately involved with prison reform, campaigning constantly and even employing ex-prisoners to give them some practical help after release. Everyone's heard of his high-profile prison shows at Folsom and San Quentin, but his 1972 show in Osteraker Prison in Sweden, organised by entertainment lawyer Olof Arvidsson is not so well-known.

That's a shame, because it's a great show. Perhaps it doesn't have the naked emotional appeal of Folsom, but it's not just for completists. It's well worthy of this expanded 25th anniversary release, with new liner notes and at twice the length of the original '72 release. Some numbers - like the riotous opening version of A Boy Named Sue and Cash's version of Kris Kristofferson's hangover song Sunday Morning Coming Down - are previously unreleased in any form, although the quality of both sound and performance is high. And Cash gets a great reception from the Swedish criminal element, speaking haltingly to them in Swedish: "Thank you my friends, I hope you like our music."

Even more interesting are the unreleased curiosities, like the encores Dirty Old Egg Suckin' Dog, Wreck of The Old `97 and I Promise You, a song Cash wrote for June Carter for their wedding day. Performed without band preparation or rehearsal, they show the singer at his most vulnerable: it's also interesting to hear this most American of American artists interact with a culture that is profoundly foreign to him.

Also restored is rock `n' roller Carl Perkin's mid-set guest spot with his songs High Heel Sneakers and Blue Suede Shoes.
