5.0 out of 5 stars XFM Debut Sessions, 11 Jan 2008
By Mr. J. F. Fernandez "Julian F" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This 2CD set has been put together with session and live versions taken from XFM's archives.

CD1 has some of last year's best tracks on it from some of the bands that broke through in 2007. All the tracks on this disc are versions of tracks from debut albums released in 2007, but some of recordings are older than that, showing that XFM are always on the money when it comes to championing new artists.

There's a brilliant acoustic versions of 'I'm Not Sorry' by the Pigeon Detectives from May 07 and Jamie T's 'Sheila' from July 06. Then there's quite a raucous version of The Twang's 'Either Way' recorded live June 07 at 229, a small London venue. Then there's a very stripped down, acoustic version of Same Jeans by The View recorded for XFM Scotland. Session recordings by Kate Nash, Jack Penate, Calvin Harris and Good Shoes all come from 2007 but the sessions by The Automatic, The Horrors, The Maccabees and Bat For Lashes all come from 2006.

Disc 2 is a step back further into musical history and shows off further how committed XFM have been to new artists and collects some of the best sessions from artists over the last ten years. In keeping with the theme on CD1, all the tracks on this album are versions of songs from each artists debut albums. The album runs in reverse chronological order (ish) se it ends with the oldest track, an acoustic, live version of `Local Boy' by the Stereophonics - and if you're a fan of them, this is a great, raw version of the track. Other stand out tracks on CD2 include the Doves `A House' which for me is worth entrance money alone - a brilliant, stripped down paino version of the track, a rough live version of The Libertines `What A Waster' and Kasabian's `Processed Beats'.

So, there are some really great versions of tracks on here and if you're a fan of these kind of artists you can't really go wrong, whether you are aware of XFM or not. There's nothing on here that sounds wrong or bad, but there are some very special moments.
