Active Vision M100 HD – 100Hz Picture Processing

It is this technologically advanced feature that pushes the Z series ahead of the current crop of LCD and plasma televisions. Active Vision M100 HD technology creates new frames to appear between the transmitted frames. It receives the broadcast signal and briefly stores the information contained within the consecutive frames. Then using complicated mathematics involving 10-bit video processing and 360 degree motion estimation it calculates the movement required by each pixel of the new intermediate image to take it halfway to the pixels new position in the consecutive broadcast frame.

HD ReadyFULL HD Ready 1080p

High Definition television offers the highest quality picture currently available for home entertainment. High Definition screen images are broadcast with either 720 or 1080 vertical lines of picture information, compared to the current PAL standard definition output of 576 lines. This increase in picture information is important to maintain a good picture quality on modern, larger screen televisions, with images stretched over much larger areas.

Full HD ReadyREGZA XV Series models are 1080p Full HD Ready, with a 16:9 format panel processing a screen resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. All screen sizes offer high definition images made up of more than 2 million pixels and are perfect for seeing all the extra detail offered by high definition broadcasts and up-scaled DVD.

HDMI CONNECTIVITY

3 HDMIIt is now accepted that the High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI™) is the industry standard for connecting modern audio visual equipment, having superseded SCART. It allows transmission of uncompressed digital video and multi-channel audio content through a single cable, with information transfer rates far higher than with previous connections. The use of a single cable greatly simplifies the installation of home entertainment systems and ensures the best quality picture and sound reproduction. All CV series models have three HDMI™ connections, allowing you to connect to more than one HD source without having to continually disconnect and reconnect different pieces of your equipment. In future it is expected all digital equipment, HD televisions and games consoles will feature HDMI™; it is essential you have multiple connections to future-proof your television.

Dynamic ContrastDynamic Contrast

Getting the best picture detail requires the right balance between brightness and contrast, too much or too little of either is a problem. Our Dynamic Contrast technology automatically adjusts the LCD panel backlight, depending on the level of brightness required by the original signal.

Dimming the backlight enables the system to reproduce fine detail and render dark scenes more realistically, with blacks having much greater depth. Increasing backlight brightness for scenes requiring more colour, produces more vibrant images with a greater intensity. The process is almost instantaneous, easily coping with fast scene changes, whilst retaining the contrast levels essential for good detail.

Natural Skin tonesDynamic Gamma Curve Correction

The Gamma Curve refers to the mid-tone contrast in an image and the values will affect the balance of these tones, without any effect on pure white or black. Correction of the Gamma Curve changes the brightness, contrast, colour balance of a combination of all three to keep the important mid-tones consistent.

Full 10-Bit Processing

An LCD television using only 8-bit processing will have to ‘dither’ colours it does not have, to create a near approximation of the colours it does not have within its palette. This can lead to banding of colours, particularly on images when there is subtle difference in colour tones.

Base ColourPrecise Colour Control

We know many of you like to change the colour performance of your screen to match your personal requirements, which is why we developed our 3D Colour Management technology. This allows you to ‘fine tune’ the brightness, hue and saturation levels of six colours until you achieve the look you want.

SpeakerPowerful Audio Performance

To make sure the Toshiba Regza Z Series hits the right note Toshiba has turned to Onkyo one of the world’s leading speaker manufacturers. The large Onkyo speakers with separate mid-bass and high frequency drive units are fitted behind the LCD panel in specially designed chambers that increase audio performance. Combined with SRS WOW which improves the dynamic performance of compressed digital audio content. The size of the stereo image is expanded and elevated, to take on huge proportions compared to the physical size of the actual speakers doing the work.

Digital TVDigital Tuner

It’s what you want; a great choice of channels, digital quality images and sound in widescreen format with innovative interactive services.

The integrated tuner in the CV series models gives you access to Freeview, the terrestrial digital broadcast service received through your existing TV aerial**. The digital signal delivers high quality video and audio without the interference and ghosting associated with conventional analogue signals.

There’s no end to the entertainment; Freeview currently offers over 40 TV channels and more than 20 digital radio stations; a superb digital text service and an advanced electronic programme guide.

The easy-to-use on-screen menu delivers a wealth of useful information including:Freeview
• 8 day at-a-glance programme listings
• Programme summaries
• What’s on – now and next
• Personal reminders
• Favourite channel memory
Remember, there’s no separate set-top box, no contract and no monthly fees.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great tv and, at £849.99 delivered from Amazon ,a bargain., 18 Jul 2008
By Johnnybluetime - See all my reviews
    (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I've been keeping an eye out for an lcd tv for some time now, obviously the longer you wait with this kind of stuff the more advanced the technology is and the lower the prices, so I was in no great rush and had actually planned to get something this autumn at the soonest. However, when I saw this tv had been discounted down to half its original price within 7 months of its release I threw caution to the wind and bought one from Amazon.

Despite all the bad reviews for HDNL I needn't have worried because delivery was fine;a phone call on the Thursday evening to set up an appointment for the following Monday and another call to say they were on their way (albeit an hour late).

As for the tv, well we think it's great looking and great to look at and we haven't even got HD yet.Our previous tv was a 32" crt Toshiba so the menus and set ups were all pretty familiar.I've done some fiddling with brightness and contrast etc to suit our tastes and the tvs position and the picture seems largely flawless to me,particularly with dvd. It's true that through our standard def. Humax pvr9200t the picture can occasionally reveal some artifacts, and if the programme being broadcast is fairly low definition it can get very blocky (we watched 5 minutes of Open Water and the picture was very poor),but overall it's as good as our old crt and in terms of motion smearing and colour bleed definitely superior to the Sony 26" d3000 we recently bought in Sainsbury's.Which is to say there's none on the 47" Tosh and noticable ammounts on the 26" Sony.Definition is very good, again much more detailed than the 26" Sony. This is all as viewed via the Humax pvr,the tv's built -in tuner isn't bad,but it's definitely not as good.Of course SD picture quality is all dependent on the strength of your signal and ours isn't great and never gets above 60% so if you get a stronger signal through your ariel you might well get better pictures. As for reviews elsewhere (What hifi and Plasma & LCD magazines)that go on about the black levels not being up to standard - I'm beggared if I can see what they're talking about. The blacks look black to me.But then we do sit about 3.5m/12ft from the tv and I suspect many people's complaints about lcds are because they're sitting too close.I must say I wouldn't recommend this tv to anyone whose seating position is much less than ours unless they're watching HD or Blu-Ray.Sound is very good, much clearer than our old crt and new Sony, although you don't get much bass at low volumes.Eventually we hope to be trying it out with full surround sound and Freesat, but in the meantime we're more than pleased with our purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good tv at a great price, 17 Jun 2008
By Stephen Watson (Falkirk, Scotland) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
OK, delivery was a day or so later than expected but that's just what happens living in Scotland.
I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I switched the unit on - the picture was not great - I was using a Virgin +hd box with decent scart lead. However, switch the input to hdmi and the quality is really good for non HD broadcasts. HD broadcasts are awesome - pity Virgin only have BBC HD at the present.
DVDs play at decent quality through a scart but I'm going to upgrade to a new player that can up-scale via hdmi.
Takes a bit of getting the menus set up the way you want but worth the effort.
Sound system is actually pretty good for a tv and can be tweaked to your liking - avoids the need for surround sound.
It looks great - probably not too good if you have a smallish room - you need to be able to sit at least a few metres from the screen to get the best results but that goes for all LCD TVs.
Overall a good unit and Amazon's price is superb
If you are looking for a large lcd tv then I'd definitely recommend this model but make sure you have a hdmi connection - I've not even tried it through a standard ariel yet

4.0 out of 5 stars great tv for a great price despite a few minor niggles, 9 Sep 2008
This TV is great, no question about that. The price and specs that you get, not to mention the awesome screen size all amount to a fantastic deal that is really unchallengeable if your budget is limited. The connections are unsurpassed, inc. 3 HDMI ports, one HD component input, a PC VGA socket and multiple SCART sockets to support older equipment you may well still need. I bought this TV purely for HD gaming, and on the xbox 360 it will not disappoint ( NB If you intend to hook your xbox 360 via VGA it will not work on this TV ) This is not a problem, as you can buy a very good LINX HDMI cable for under a tenner on amazon anyway, and HDMI is the way you want to go if your xbox is under a year old, as it enables full 1080p gaming and, if you hook up the ludicrously cheap HD DVD player add-on you will achieve 1080p video resolution, which is NOT possible via component. The sound is good and crisp and the speakers are neatly tucked away at the back of the TV. They are Onkyo speakers, a respected brand. The colours through HD DVD playback are incredible on this TV. You must buy Terminator 2 just to see how vivid and powerful the image can be. But be aware that if you go for older HD DVDs you may well be disappointed. The ones I bought were little more than the standard version, showing up appalling film grain. I blame the dvd conversion and not the TV regarding this. So overall a great TV- the minor annoyances are the black levels- let's face it, they are quite poor, but the rest of the colour spectrum largely makes up for this flaw. Also, the remote control is strangely unresponsive- something I have noticed on all Toshibas I have owned. You have to point the remote rather too accurately to get it to respond. Apart from that the specs on this TV are limitless - 24fps 5:5 pulldown with HD feeds, active vision, which ensures that the image quality will almost never blur, no matter how fast the camera may be moving. For example, Wimbledon looked great and really showed what this tv is capable of demonstrating - a smooth, stablised image with vivid colours. The integrated freeview is great, and works amazingly well with an internal aerial, and to this day has only lost a signal for a fraction of a second only once or twice ( helped by the internal antenna amplifier) Buy this TV and you will not be disappointed. It is future-proof and excellent value for money. It took me almost 3 years and 3 returned lcd tvs until I finally found the right one, and it is the Toshiba 47Z!
