Two years after the acclaimed US TV mini-series Roots made television history, this sequel to one of the most highly watched programmes of all time continued the saga, again attracting large audiences, critical acclaim and many awards. The story picks up where the first one left off in 1882, by which time Tom Harvey, the great-grandson of Kunta Kinte has established a marginal existence as a blacksmith in Henning, Tennessee. Relations between the races are strained and prejudices and hatred of the past survives.
Roots: The Next Generation, just like the first series, featured a superb who's who of African-American actors of their day, along with Hollywood heavyweights such as Henry Fonda, Olivia De Havilland and Harry Morgan. Marlon Brando also stars in an unusual role as the Aryan leader of a Nazi organisation.

Roots: The Complete Collection is also available, which brings together for the first time all the original episodes, sequels and extras of the award-winning series in one box set, comprising Roots: The Original Series 4-Disc Box Set, the 1979 sequel Roots: The Next Generation, and, for the first time on DVD, Roots: The Gift, a movie that focuses on the relationship between two of the slaves of the original series.
Synopsis
Winning nine Emmys and viewed by more than 130 million Americans, the NBC mini-series ROOTS greatly impacted American views of slavery and the black experience. It was followed by this massive 14-hour mini-series two years later later in 1979. Although not as popular as the original, this series did garner high ratings and earned an Emmy for Marlon Brando and a nomination for Ruby Dee. Beginning in 1882 where the original series left off, this epic tale follows the African-American experience after the slaves were freed, but when their opportunities were still greatly limited. The journey takes the audience through the life of writer Alex Haley (played by James Earl Jones), including a dramatic concluding episode studying the influence of Malcolm X, and Haley's discovery of Kunta Kinte.
