Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Kate Nash is the perfect pop starlet. She sounds enough like one existing star to make her an already snug fit for your tastes (if it needs spelling out for you--L.I.L.Y.A.L.L.E.N--there’s no getting away from the thematic and elocutionary parallels, no matter how much the lady doth protest). She’s ordinary-ish. She’s you, your girlfriend, that girl over there you adore/admire, only clearly cuter and packed with a sharper tongue. She sings of nothing much, but sings it with juicy vim and bright expressions through a deliciously theatrical voice-box, a hangover from her stage school background that faltered, leading her to channel her wit and personality into writing songs. A sprinkling of anarchy too--something for the parents to disapprove of? Well, she’s got a filthy mouth and a frankly blasé grasp of the Queen’s English. It’s a shame really that she’s not quite made the perfect pop debut to match, but Made of Bricks is a damn fine first run, when it gets it right. The jerky prelude to the album proper, "Play" reminds briefly of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bis, segueing into the Lily Allen plays Carter USM playfulness of "Foundations". "Dickhead" is a silly, smoky blues ditty, the massive, gyrating "Pumpkin Song" is Sugababes with their hair pulled behind the bike sheds, key-hammering highlight "Mariella" reminds of expressive vaudeville New Yorkers the Dresden Dolls and "We Get On" could be a Grease outtake, though nothing the innocent Olivia Newton John would ever wrap her lips around. Like Lily Allen then, but not that much. --James Berry

BBC Review

It would be very easy to dislike Kate Nash's Made Of Bricks. The debut album of a wannabe stage school girl who only turned to music to keep herself amused while recovering from a broken foot has disaster written all over it. Throw in her begging-to-be-mocked scenester anthem and first single "Caroline's A Victim" plus the 'Lily Allen's MySpace friend' tag, and the house that Kate built would appear to rest on very shaky foundations indeed.

However any fears are somewhat unfounded. For a 20-year-old, Nash has constructed an album of surprising verve and variety. Whether breaking into spoken word over beats on opener "Play" or, displaying her dainty side on the jaunty piano-driven "We Get On", she displays a unique tone and style. Let's be honest, it's all delivered in a singing voice that would hardly charm sailors to their death but no matter, it's Nash's lyrics which take precedent here.

At times her honesty and self deprecation are startling and her words bristle with the intimacy of a private diary entry. Whether the tortured secret longing of "Nicest Thing" - 'I wish I was your favourite girl/ I wish you thought I was the reason you are in the world' or literally laying herself bare on "Mouthwash" - it's a revealing ride.

However, at times Kate's simplistic soul baring is also her undoing, especially when it slips into the mundane territory of making tea. The same colloquial style that makes her charming can also make her somewhat dull and a propensity to swear at every turn occasionally breaks the spell.

Nash is to be praised for using Regina Spektor's piano riffing and vocal eccentricity as her template and combined with Paul Epworth's fine production ear, she's constructed an album which despite its flaws is one of this year's more interesting offerings. --Roman Tagoe

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 7 Jan 2008
This review is from: Made of Bricks (Audio CD)
Upon hearing Foundations for the first time on the radio, I did think it was Lily Allen, I can't deny it. But I was informed it was Kate Nash, who I'd never heard of. I rushed off to get the album and was shocked.

Innocent and wise, beautiful but ugly, pure truth and fun, with laughter and so much personality it would fill a small country, Made Of Bricks is the best album I have listened to in 2007.

Of course, there are a couple of dud tracks, but I can still happily listen to the entire album without needing to skip anything.

I personally don't think Nash released anything like her best songs- Mouthwash and Pumpkin Soup have grown on me since their releases, however, the songs which struck me the first time I listened are unlikely to ever be heard by anyone who doesn't buy this album.

Birds and Nicest Thing are quietly beautiful, whereas We Get On, Merry Happy and Mariella are bursting with fun with a bittersweet aftertaste.

These 5 songs make this album for me. The rest of the album is still brilliant by most standards, however, it is these songs I think she should be remembered for.

Having said that, I can honestly say that I listen to this album straight through, regardless of my mood or anything. I was shocked at how easy it was to listen to and like this album.

Made Of Bricks is the album that we need today, it summarises many, many issues in life without necessarily being specific about them. Personally, I feel that Kate Nash has reached and touched a whole generation.

On the other hand, if you can't stand her singles, you're unlikely to like this album.

NB: If you're looking for gutsy, pouty, cynical view of the world (ie Lily Allen's debut....), you are in the wrong place. Kate Nash is the light to Lily Allen's dark view of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by the bad reviews, 7 Dec 2007

This review is from: Made of Bricks (Audio CD)
I eventually brought this album despite nearly being put off by the negative reviews.

It was delivered yesterday and its amazing.

I'm 34 so way over the albums 'target' audience and love it!

It may be 'aimed' at teenagers but to overlook it because of that would be a grave mistake.

I brought this and Lily Allens album at the same time and they have huge differences,I must say I prefer this one of the two.

The best track is 'the nicest thing'- a ballad of unrequited love that is so easy to relate to, it sounds very 'Kate Bush' (instrumentally not lyrically/vocally) particularly near the end, reminds me very much of 'Love and Anger' and is very haunting....'mouthwash,'birds' and 'mariella' are the other high points.

This is a great album full of a variety of emotions, it fun, quirky, comic in many places, sassy but underneath all that it has a lot of undertones to resentment, disappointment and apathy.

Only wish I'd got it sooner rather than deliberating.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesnt stand up to repeated listening - but a definite talent !, 21 Dec 2008
This review is from: Made of Bricks (Audio CD)

I came to this only knowing the great "Foundations" track - a great mix of melancholic ruminations on a disintegrating relationship but I have to say that I found this album quite tedious to listen to. Kate's slightly hoarse delivery of her vocals (sexy at first I have to admit) becomes a little boring after a while. And yes, she can write some cheeky lyrics and these I imagine are what the "youngsters" latch onto but theres nothing of any great depth here. The exceptions are "Foundations" and also "Nicest Thing" - by the time you get to this latter track I was really grateful for a subtle change in the overall sound which this track has. It has a beautifully melancholy violin in the background which suits the lyrics perfectly. I can only guess that someone different produced this track as it is head and shoulders above the others - and this is the kind of track I'd like to hear Kate do more of.
