Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Have you ever been gasping for a cup of tea but can't be bothered to boil up the kettle? Or wished you had a way of making a cup of coffee or a hot chocolate in one mug full? Now, thanks to a revolutionary new hot water dispenser and water filter hybrid called Quick Cup, you can.

Tefal Quick Cup is an extremely clever invention as it serves hot (not boiling) or cool water on demand in only 3 SECONDS and uses only a third of the energy of an ordinary kettle - so a great time, energy and money saver.

Thanks to a unique "Opti-Quick" technology system (a patented innovation by Tefal), you don't need to pre-heat your water. With the push of a button, the water is sent up the heating element in a spiral movement, heating it immediately as it travels. This way, no energy is wasted on heating water you don't need, or boiling water you don't use. In fact, Quick Cup provides an energy saving of up to 65% compared to a standard kettle, helping you to save on bills too. Tefal energy experts have calculated that there could be a £31 cost-saving per year using Quick Cup compared to an ordinary kettle. So if you are thinking of replacing your kettle and want to help reduce your carbon footprint, then Quick Cup could be the best way to help put your energy-saving intentions into action.

Tefal

Tefal owes its origins to a Frenchman, Marc Grégoire, and his wife, Colette. M. Grégoire, a keen fisherman, wanted to make his rod reel in more smoothly and, in the 1950's, experimented to see if a non stick coating might provide the answer. It did! But it was his wife who made the real breakthrough by gently suggesting that coating the cooking pans would have a more worthwhile application by making them easier to cook with and simpler to clean. Now, Tefal is the number one name in non-stick products and small appliances, operating in over 120 countries. Tefal remains committed to making household tasks easier and cooking results better, through a constant flow of new ideas and technology.

3.0 out of 5 stars Promises more than it delivers, 19 Aug 2007
This is my second review of this product as I thought an update was needed after my first one. You cannot place a second review of a product so I have had to replace my original one by editing it. My original review was placed on the 19th Aug and now, less than two months later, I have a replacement in my kitchen because the first just stopped working. It stopped mid-flow, whilst filling a mug and the red light stayed on. It banged as though something blew electrically but the fuse was still fine as the red power light was on. I thought it would be interesting to see if the second product was just as noisy and spurty and vibrated as much. It doesn't.

This is slightly quieter and smoother as it dispenses water and the water flows in more of a continuous stream than the broken version, although not completely smoothly. Perhaps that one was always faulty. The new one splashes a little less than the previous one but still splashes nontheless. I still have to wipe the worktop dry.

Great I thought, until I drank my coffee. Yes this one is smoother in dispensing the water without the spurts of steam but it is not hot. If you don't drink it as soon as it is made it is too cold within minutes. If you don't have milk then you may be ok but I do. I suspect the dispensing shortfall of the previous version was due to it heating up the water to a higher temperature but that is what a kettle is for, isn't it? Add 20 seconds in a 900 Watt microwave and our energy savings with this product are being cancelled out. The added inconvenience of reheating is something I may have suspected if this was a cheap product by an unknown brand but it is a premium price over many kettles on the market.

It is no accident that the advertisement for this product on TV shows a graphical simulation of how this product works rather than a real product actually dispensing hot water.

My wife reminded me that the first Quick Cup I bought had to go back to the shop because a piece of the plastic water container was broken off in the box when we got it home so in fact we are on our third Quick Cup. When I took this one back with the receipt, the sales assistant asked "hadn't I already returned this?" Only two out of the three I've brought home have been used and so far it scores zero out of two.

I can't change my original rating of 3 stars because I am editing an original review but now I would rate this one or two stars. A second star for a good idea badly executed.

Don't get suckered in by the carbon footprint guilt trip, until there is a product released that works effectively. Yes, strictly speaking, water for coffee shouldn't be boiling but we wouldn't dream of using the water out of our hot water taps. My latest model doesn't seem too far from that temperature and I should really take it back for a refund. It's not fit for purpose... I think they say.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good idea but not quite perfect, 17 Mar 2008
By Mrs. Rebecca Thorn "beccamm31" (Belgium) - See all my reviews

First of all, after reading the other reviews, i have to say i only drink coffee so i have no problems with the water temp.

Its a great idea and ideal for a cup/mug but if i was making coffee for a few people i would more than likely use the kettle. it is quick but the slow water stream means u have to stir as its filling and I have to hold the mug up because other wise is spits drops of coffee all over the place.

Hopefully the next model/s will take care of a lot of the problems

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for coffee drinkers!, 19 Nov 2007
By M. J. Webber (Stoke-on-Trent, England) - See all my reviews

There's a lot of mixed reaction to this little device, so I admit to buying it only when I had gained assurance I could return it if it didn't satisfy! Slightly to my surprise, it did:)

As everyone has pointed out: this is NOT a kettle: it does NOT _boil_ water, and is therefore no good for tea or Snackpots. It is however very good for coffee. I find the temperature is just about right after milk has been added. My wife, who likes coffee HOT, enjoys instant latte sachets and coffee made with whitener, and she also approves. We've now owned the QuickCup for two months, and it gets used for about 95% of our hot-water beverages. We keep a regular kettle next to it for the occassions when that is needed (maybe two or three boils a week).

A previous review expressed doubt that this device would affect energy consumption as it was not a kettle and therefore could not be compared to one. I dissagree. This machine not only heats only the water you precisely need, but by not actually boiling it, also uses less energy to do that. In addition to this, the QuickCup does not get noticeably hot while operating: the heat goes to the water and does not escape through the sides as in most kettles.

As regards to noise, the pump mechanism does make a penetrating buzzing noise, but I tried boiling the regular kettle next to it. I was surprised to discover the buzz was actually drowned out by the sound of the kettle boiling. It sounds nonsensical, but the QuickCup isn't as loud as it sounds:)

To conclude: we use the QuickCup constantly and are glad we bought it. Tefal _were_ slightly 'economical' with the truth (the tv ads omit the buzzing sound and you have to read the small-print to discover it isn't actually a kettle) but if you look into the reviews with eyes open, and you are predominantly a coffee drinker, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
