Don't throw out the razor yet, 12 April 2008
I got this shaver as a replacement for the daily grind of smearing shaving cream in the morning, using a Gillette Mach3 or Fusion and often ending up with redness and occasional cuts. I have been using this for many months now and here's what I've found.
Positive -
1. The RQ 1095 shaver is indeed a very good product and the shave is at par with the best that Gillette has to offer, minus the cuts or redness. The shaver glides very easily over the face and is capable of the closest possible shave.
2. The cleaning kit and solution are very good and the shaver feels like new each time I clean it (usually once every 2 weeks).
3. The battery indicator is very accurate and a great feature to have.
4. The portable charger is also very handy for short trips.
Negative -
1. The trimmer is pretty poor and I often end up using the Mach3 to catch any hairs that the trimmer ought to have snapped up.
2. The cleaning kit does take a fair while to clean the shaver and after the cleaning it automatically starts charging the shaver. I don't particularly like this as it means you can't just leave the shaver plugged in while it's cleaning. Overcharging the battery could ruin it.
3. The shaver has not reduced the total time I spend each morning. Despite that I can't think of going back to a razor full time.
4. The Jet clean solution only lasts for 2 applications and thus requires a change every month.
Some tips -
1. The instructions provided in the manual are simple enough and if you have not used a shaver before, be patient with this shaver as it does take time to get used to it. Everyone has different skin sensitivities and it may take your skin longer or less to get used to this.
2. Personally I get a better shave by using a pre-shave conditioning solution. I have tried shave oils but they don't do the trick for me. A conditioning solution along with a splash of water is the way to go to ensure that the skin is never dry while shaving. Dry shaving is over hyped and moisture is the key to a better shave.
3. Use both up/down and circular motions while shaving and do not press the shaver too hard. Instead if you feel that the shaver's missing a spot, simple splash water and then gently go over the area again.
4. After I'm done shaving, I always use an after shave balm to prevent dryness or irritation. I feel that it certainly helps.
Overall this is a good product and I would recommend this over similar shavers. The HS8060 was the other model I was considering but the cleaning kit with this model was the deciding factor. The 8060 shaver does come with a built in shaving lotion dispensing option but the pre-conditioning gel along with an occasional splash of water does the same for me with this one. If not for the poor trimmer, this would be a 5/5 product.

Philips RQ1095 ARCitec Rotary Shaver review, 7 Jan 2008
Hopefully, this view/opinion of this product will be of some use to someone. I have very course/thick hair so wet shaving is out for me, no matter how soft, soaped and soaked my chin is and how new and sharp the razor is, this is a painful experience. I,ve had a few rechargeable/mains+ shavers in the past including Hitachi, Braun and philips. My last 'good' shaver was a philips 925 three head rotary, bought about ,. . er... 15 ish years ago! it was always ok but not spectacular (it would jam sometimes..ouch! ) So I thought maybe I,d treat myself, although £230 seemed like BIG money for a shaver (925 cost over £100 back then!!) with a bit of searching I found it on amazon for £156 + free postage. What's it like? Shaving with it is a bit like moving a piece of smooth metal over your face, it's the easiest shave I've ever had. It's definitely the closest, just keep smoothing away, this is a very close shave !!! So far I haven't used the big automatic cleaner it comes with but I guess I will sometimes, after a shave just run the shave heads under a hot tap and leave open (they hinge open for this purpose) to dry. One more VERY important thing, finally, , , FINALLY they have got rid of the old nicad rechargeable batteries and are using lithium ion!! I know some people have problems with batteries but speak as I find in all of the gadgets I've had (ipods many, phones a few, cameras etc.) I find that if you charge the battery, use 80-90% then recharge. My batts have lasted excellently. Another point worth mentioning is, you can't use this shaver plugged into the mains, as it sits in it's dock/pod/charger, then you plug this into the power to charge it up. ( don't know if that's good or bad,but it is always a cordless shaver!) To round this up I only shave 3-4 times a week + once a week wet shave my neck as well, ( this is different hair, on me anyway! ) brilliant shaver, very pleased . Recommended.

This is the best shaver ever, 21 Oct 2007
I bought this for a whopping £250 in the hope that it would finally sort out the issue which i've always had which is to remove hair from my neck area without leaving unsightly red marks. It has special shaving heads which pivot in every direction to get a really close shave - apparently. I wasn't disappointed. The hype was definitely justified. There were 4 in the range to choose from and this is the top one as it comes with a clean and recharge unit which ensures that it's always ready for me to use and in tip top condition - cleaned and hygienic and fully charged. I certainly think this feature is worth the extra money I paid. I like the finer things in life and this was a bit of an extravagance but as a treat to myself it was well worth the money. The confidence it gives me due to not leaving my face in pieces is worth every penny. It's by far the closest electric shave i've ever had. I would recommend this to everyone looking for a new shaver.
