4.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the naysayers and give it a whirl!, 19 Jul 2007
Through a rather convoluted chain of events, I ended up writing the sleevenotes for this album reissue. 'Hello Pig' may not be the Levellers' most instantly accessible record, but it is their most rewarding given a little time and patience. It's also the band's own favourite, and well-worth revisiting if you're prepared to open your mind to something a little different!

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it so hard to get it?, 16 Jul 2007
By Alejandro "new_fad" (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
I can't understand why some people get disappointed when the bands they know come up with something new, different and innovative. I am a Levs fan since their 3rd album, "Levelling the Land" was out, but have to admit that it took me more than one time to listen to "Pig" and understand it. This may be probably their best-done effort. Musically is incredibly rich, the production impeccable, and the lyrics poignant and touching. Interesting the way how it is put together with beautiful connecting melodies and sounds/effects. If you listen to it from beginning to end you will be submerged in an experience to blow out your mind (this is one of those works where art and music collide). Give it a try and see what I'm talking about.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just awful; the Levellers' duff album, 15 Jul 2007
To be fair on the Levellers, even the greatest of music artists can occasionally turn out a real turkey. Think Morrissey's 'Kill Uncle' or Bob Dylan's 'Knocked Out Loaded'. This lamentable album seems to have been the result of the Levellers trying to go all experimental and prove a point to the music press that they were more than just a bunch of crusty folk-rockers. However experimentalism is fine when coupled with real vision, however much of 'Hello Pig' sounds like a series of weak songs being made poorer by throwing in uncommercial production quirks.
The worst is 'The Weed that Killed Elvis' with its distorted vocals and monotonous feel however the rest of the album feels like mediocre filler around the Beatlesish first track 'Happy Birthday Revolution'. The latter would have been fine as a one off novelty single with maybe '61 Minutes of Pleading' as the B Side. I've no idea to whom the rest of this album would appeal.
This new edition contains some unreleased tracks from the sessions; the mind boggles as to what songs rejected in favour of 'The Weed that Killed Elvis' sound like.
