4.0 out of 5 stars Is it too soon to be disapointed? , 29 Oct 2007
By S. Davies - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
First off let me say that i am a masive Pro Evo fan and have been looking forward to the release of PES 2008 for sometime since a somewhat below par PES 6.

I am however somewhat disapointed with the latest offering ... now dont get me wrong what people have mentioned about graphics etc etc are spot on and are impressive and they have tweaked certain areas that definately needed improving. A nice touch is the option to send more men forward on corners and set pieces Also playing against the computer has been dramatically improved through the subtle differences the new AI has brought to the game is much more challenging and less frustrating than PES 6. The biggest positive change is the passing and movement of the players, which means games are free flowing and not so repetitive because goals can now come from many different sources instead of just a through ball to Adriano!

This however is also my 1st gripe, it is now extremely easy to score and to score from just about anywhere. This i know is better than PES 6 but already you can score for fun and we all know it takes a few weeks to really get into Pro Evo so what happens after you have mastered the game will it be a case of shooting from any where on the pitch and hitting the top corner every time?
A prime example of this are the free kicks. already i have scored more freekicks in the last couple of days than i have compared to a whole years worth of PES 6.
After playing a few ranked matches online it has become quite apparent through the scorelines as several matches i played alot of them have ended with big scores like: 5-5, 7-6, 4-5, 8-3 and i have yet to play in a game where i havent scored. Ok so its not boring but its also not realistic a factor which is something that PES tries to emulate throughout its game play.

Also with a highly skilled player such as Ronaldinho you can literally walk the length of the pitch giving the defenders the run around and then walk the ball into the net. Defending has definately become more of a challenge than PES 6 where i felt the real challenge was scoring different types of goals. Again this can be seen as both a positive and negative element to the game but personally i feel the balance should have be somewhere in between as scoring long range efforts and tricky individual goals happen that often they will become the norm and not the wonder goals we used to scream about and watch the replays time and time again.

My major problem with PES 2008 is the online game play as people have already mentioned before i am also very disapointed with the frame rate and lagging as i much prefer to pit my wits online against human players, Which has meant i have spent more time playing against the computer due to be being extremely frustrated with the pinball effect that occurs in every online game.
The whole online experience compared to PES 6 is extremely slow going, from searching and finding a suitable match etc to the other extremely annoying element to the online play, which is the constant dual controlled replays. This means your always waiting for your opponent to skip whatever replay is being shown this is made more time consuming with the option to send a message to your opponent. Whilst it might be a nice idea it is totally unnecessary and most of the options it gives you to send are irrelevant. All this does is slow down the time it takes to complete a game as nearly every action results in this replay and you recieve the message: "Waiting for another player" and you end up spending 20 minutes playing a 10 minute match!

No doubt not everyone will agree with my opinion but remember this is only my first impressions of the game after playing it for 4 days (quite intensely) I'm not trying to rubbish the game as i am a big PES fan and i just wanted to vent some of my early frustrations, maybe the wait and expectation has simply overcome me but like i said earlier it takes a few weeks to really get into any PES game and i really hope that it proves me wrong as the little intricate elements to the game play become more apparent. With regards to the online lagging i'm sure it will be sorted with an update in the very near future but i'm sure they wont improve the replay options as much as would love them to remove it because i'm far too impatient!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disaster for Pro Evo, 27 Nov 2007

Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This game is the worst edition of a series that has been improving year after year. The real problem with this game is online part of the game, which is, unplayable. A real letdown for a longtime fan who has logged countless hours of play over the years with the Pro Evo franchise.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pro Evo 2008 vs Fifa 08 - , 25 Nov 2007

Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
ok first of all i own both and i have to say that both are to a poor standard and after being dissapointed by fifa 08 i was looking to pro evo as usual to wipe the floor with it, but this year it does not, the gameplay has been made worse than pro evo 6, its frustrating, xbox live lags massively even when playing my mates (we all have 8mg broadband from same supplier) this game wasnt made for online play its better than fifa when it comes to offline play, but if your into xbox live games then fifa offers a much wider variety of game modes.

-Fifa has better graphics, online and more licenced teams

-Pro has better offline play, gameplay and edit modes

My opinion is that if you have £40 to spend on an xbox 360 football game buy fifa 08
