Synopsis

Rita Tushingham stars in this Hammer thriller as Brenda, a young Liverpool lass who goes to London in search of the perfect man and a better life. Unfortunately, the seamy underside of London grabs hold of her when she falls for a handsome but psychotic young man named Peter (Briant). Becoming increasingly obsessed with Peter, Brenda begins to lose touch with both herself and reality and fails to recognize that Peter is a misanthropic murderer. An incredibly bleak thriller, STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING is a sardonic, nightmarish fairy tale that presents the flipside of early 1970s feminism.

3.0 out of 5 stars this is a review, 19 April 2007
Briant & Tushingham work very well together in this ugly, self conciously modish "Poor Cow on speed" psycho thriller, they both act their roles very believably given the unconvincing script.

Not much else to recommend here- a good supporting cast, including the criminally (as ever) under used Tom Bell sporting long hair & mutton chop side burns, is wasted whilst Tushingham does her trademark "plain innocent from up north" victim turn which dates (or lends "period charm") the film badly as by 1972 cliches like this were very old hat. Some nice London locations & the usual keep the viewer interested despite the threadbare story.

A frank but not too informative commentary by Tushingham has a few inaccuracies by moderator Jonathan Sothcott (such as stating James Bolam's appearance was pre-Likely Lads-which began in 1965) & is a little too jokey & lightweight with little in the way of analysis beyond the usual trivia & "now we see James Bolam" banalities.

A little seen film for fans of early 70s British decor/fashion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, brilliant psychological thriller, 5 Jul 2009
By Katie (London UK) - See all my reviews
First of all, I haven't seen the UK DVD release of this movie (which appears to be in the incorrect aspect ratio from the product details) so I cannot comment on the image quality - I have the region 1 Anchor Bay, anamorphic widescreen version - which is an absolute stunner to look at.

I had been wanting to see this rare film for years so I was pleased to see it finally receiving a DVD release.
As well as being a genuinely unnerving, deeply deranged psycho thriller, this is also a wonderful snapshot of London in the early 1970's - with some fabulous location work shot around the Earls Court area.

Rita Tushingham gives an incredible performance as a childlike young woman who travels to London from Liverpool to find a man who can give her the baby she so desperately yearns for.

She does find a man. But he happens to be 'Peter' - the character played by Shane Briant.
Surely one of the craziest characters ever committed to film.

The film grips from the start, to the incredibly bleak and downbeat ending.
The editing is stunning - really brave and innovative. The same can also be said for the inspired soundtrack.

Well worth adding to your collection if you're a fan if the unusual.

2.0 out of 5 stars One of the weaker films from the Hammer stable, 1 Jan 2008
By LXIX (scotland) - See all my reviews
'Straight On Till Morning' is about a naive girl from Liverpool who writes fairy stories and moves to London in the hope of finding her handsome prince and having a baby (why she bothered moving to London when I'm sure that some of the Liverpudlians would have obliged is another matter).

Anyway, after being exposed as a wallflower and a bit wet behind the ears amongst the London in-crowd she finally does find her prince - a suave bachelor with a flash car and a large mews house. The only problem is that he's also a homicidal maniac and a bit too handy with a stanley knife that he keeps (strategically) on his bedside table.

I do enjoy the nostalgia of the old Hammer films and Katya Wyeth certainly lights up this 92 minute movie from 1972, but for me it just wasn't a particularly strong film. The first 15 minutes are actually rather confusing and I don't think it really took off much after that.
