3.0 out of 5 stars a for andromeda redux, 21 Aug 2007

I have to agree with the reviewer who says this is a remake you can only like if you haven't seen the original. I saw this - a condensed 90 minutes version of the 7 part 60's story of a message from space leading to building of a computer that creates artificial life - prior to watching the andromeda anthology. It's certainly well paced, although sub plots do seem to disappear as a result, and it's decent and quite well acted story. The trouble is that being self contained, with no sign of a remake of the sequel, it all feels a bit flat and inconsequential in the end.

If you recall the original then this may not do much for you.

If you never saw it then start with this, and then get the andromeda anthology dvd collection. both are worth watching

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete rubbish, 15 Nov 2006

Cheap, superficial. Wooden acting from Jane Asher. Considering the original series consisted of seven 45min episodes followed up by another six of the same length, it's no wonder this 90 minute film falls short of anything acceptable in terms of presenting the original story.

I don't really expect the science to make complete sense, but this film doesn't even try to stick to the basics.

The BBC could have made a real effort and produced a new series that did justice to the original Hoyle story. After all, it's as relevant now as it was then. Instead they chose (on cost grounds I assume) to produce something that was a waste of what little money they spent on it. Don't worry about judging it against the original (you can't because the BBC deleted it :-)), just viewed in its own terms it fails in all respects.

Best avoided.

3.0 out of 5 stars Have To Do, 22 Nov 2006
Perhaps this is one of those times that you can only like a remake if you haven't seen the original. Apparently originally stretching past the three hour mark, it is little surprise that this version of A For Andromeda has had to jettison much of the plot. Occasionally this is irritating (a subplot involving US espionage is dropped like a hot potato) but in general the narrative holds together remarkably well (perhaps like so much sci-fi of the time, the original was far slower than it needed to be). Shorn of opinion on the original, Andromeda can be allowed to stand on its own merits. And stand it does, just about. True, the main character is a little cold, perhaps, and the conclusion drifts uncomfortably close to the old "We must teach it the meaning of love!" ending that has ruined so much of science-fiction. On the other hand, though the genuinely otherworldly nature of Andromeda herself and the consideration (however heavy-handed) of what happens when man extends his grasp and of the perils of narrow vision (be it the scientists desperate to create new medicine or the miliatary eager to build better weapons) make this worth a look. Especially since you've no chance of seeing the original version, unless you do it through a haze of nostalgia.

This a dreadful remake of the original series - in fact its not a remake at all just a cobble of a two of the original sub-plots. Read more
