Synopsis

Tom Cruise stars as secret agent Ethan Hunt in all three blockbuster instalments of the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise, collected here. Based on the hit 1960s-'70s TV series, the films feature a raucous mix of spectacular chases, amazing stunts, high-tech gadgetry, and elaborate schemes. Set against a backdrop of paranoia and intrigue, Hunt and his Impossible Mission Force (IMF) traverse the globe, working to foil the plans of villains and terrorists. And as ever, it's a question of who's double-crossing whom?

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a great example of Blu Ray but a slight improvement on the DVD, 11 April 2009
By VinnyP (Surrey UK) - See all my reviews
These 3 films will be well known to most people as a fun franchise with 3 excellent directors all putting their own stamp on the material. Tom Cruise delivers 3 very good performances and the pace and action set pieces are all very good. The 1st Movie is as slick as any of them and very stylish. The cast are excellent and it stands up to repeat viewings. The issue I have is with the transfer to blu-ray. The Sound is compressed Dolby Digital 5.1 and the picture is quite noisy and soft. This is a 1996 film so when you consider what they have been able to do with the 1960s films like Dr No and 2001 this is very disapointing. Indeed this is true of all 3 films but MI III does look superb. Whilst that soundtrack is also DD 5.1 it's as good as I have heard for a compressed soundtrack. It's also a great watch. The third disk also has a good selection of extras. The middle disk is considered to be the weakest of the 3 films and does suffer slightly from style over content. It's very John Woo so yes amazing photography, stunning locations and stylish slo-mo action almost balletic.

It's therefore a shame that again the picture is quite weak on this; showing a lot of compression and noise in some scenes and in this case the soundtrack as well is quite underwhelming compared to what is possible with the format. The pre title sequence of the rock climbing is a good example with a lot of noise in the blue sky and a lack of dynamism in the music. it also falls in the middle in terms of extra features.

So 3 good films 2 very good but 2 disappointing disks. Worth adding to your collection and a slight upgrade from the DVDs but I really think they could have done much better.
