Product Description

Manufacturer's Description:

Why Sony? Because Sony keeps raising the standard of excellence in digital photography, introducing more high-quality features at affordable cost--and enhancing creative possibilities as well as expanding technology horizons. For superior value, the compact Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W70 provides 7.2-megapixel resolution for big prints and photo cropping, large 2.5-inch LCD screen, advanced optics and the appeal of traditional rangefinder shooting--so photo enthusiasts will have a camera that's equally adept at saving their memories and capturing their vision.

7.2-Megapixel Super HAD CCD
With higher megapixel resolution, you'll have more detail for editing and cropping your images and making large prints. Sony's advanced Super HAD (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise.

Extra-Large 2.5-Inch LCD Screen
The DSC-W70 has an extra-large 2.5-inch LCD screen for setting up and viewing images--with a one-touch "Play" button that makes it quick and easy to view your photos.

Function Guide Text/Icon Display
An on-screen Function Guide text/icon display makes it easy to learn the camera functions that give you greater creative freedom to adjust colour mode (including "Natural" for subtle colours and "Vivid" for more intense colours), sensitivity, brightness, and image size.

High Sensitivity Mode
A new High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 1000) lets you shoot without flash for more natural results in low-light conditions and shoot at higher shutter speed to minimize blur from unsteady hands or fast-moving subjects--and Sony's original Clear RAW NR (Noise Reduction) image processing technology helps suppress the colour noise that can accompany high-sensitivity shooting.

Carl Zeiss 3x Optical/2x Digital Zoom
3x optical zoom helps the DSC-W70 bring distant subjects closer and lets you frame shots for better composition; Sony's precision 2x digital zoom provides an additional 2x magnification to enlarge details without jagged edges.

Stamina Battery Power
A powerful Lithium Ion rechargeable battery allows the DSC-W70 to capture up to 2902 images--and the compact BC-CSG battery charger is also supplied for battery recharging on the go.

14x Smart Zoom Feature
Sony's Smart Zoom feature intelligently "crops into" the central portion of interest in your photo--avoiding the image degradation of other digital zooms. Depending on picture size, you can extend 3x optical zoom to 4.1x (3 MP), 5.2x (2 MP), or 14x (VGA).

High-Capacity 58 MB Internal Memory
With built-in 58 MB internal memory, the DSC-W70 allows you to capture images without a flash memory card--then transfer your images to optional Memory Stick Duo media, upload to your computer or make prints on your digital printer.

Memory Stick Duo Media
The DSC-W70 has a built-in slot for optional Memory Stick Duo or higher-capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo media--the ultra-compact media for shooting, storing and sharing your photo images.

MPEG Movie VX Fine Mode
The DSC-W70 can capture VGA (640 x 480) audio-video clips at high frame rate (up to 30 frames per second), with length limited only by the capacity of your media.

Product Description

The Cyber-shot W70 offers a slim aluminium body, 7.2 effective Megapixels, High ISO Sensitivity for sharper shots in low-light conditions, Carl Zeiss 3x Optical zoom lens, large 2.5-inch LCD screen, great Stamina battery life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W70, 5 Aug 2006
By M. La-Band "M. La-Band" (Sawbridgeworth, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought my Dad the excellent new Canon Powershot S3 for his birthday earlier in July 2006 and decided that I really wanted a new camera too. I had intended to buy the same camera, but as I wanted to be able to use it in places like Mexico City and other large cities I decided it would be too big and overly-attractive to thieves as it can't fit in a pocket!

I had a look on the internet for the best compact digital cameras with optical zoom lenses and this one - the DSC-W70 was coming out top almost every time. I looked into the DSC-W100 too, but every review I read said that it was no better (you can't use lens filters and extension with it, and there is no decernable difference in image quality between the 7.2 and 8.1 megapixels resolutions). Therefore I opted for the W70 with a 1gb Memorystick Duo Pro (high speed) for a little over the list price of the DSC-W100.

Although I've only had the camera for a couple of days I am very impressed with the quality of the shots that I've taken so far. I have upgraded from a Sony DSC-P31 that I bought in summer 2001 and as with that machine the quality of Sony's build quality is evident (perhaps with the exception of the battery/memory card door...bit flimsy!) as soon as you take it out of the box.

The Carl Zeiss lens is extremely sensitive and produces stunning results and I am pretty impressed with the functionality of the new Cyber-shot Application software for Microsoft Windows, which allows you to view, edit and manipulate your photographs (and view slideshows).

The Amazon.co.uk price is the best out there and it was delivered within two days of my ordering it (first class postage is worth the extra few pounds). Well worth the money and it is a camera that you will be able to grow into as your photographic style develops. If like me you were tempted by a digital SLR or a bridging camera (like to Canon S3), but ultimately wanted something you could slip in your pocket on holiday then the DSC-W70 is not going to disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Phony Sony, 28 Jul 2006
Excellent camera. Purchased this about a month ago, and absolutely delighted with it. Great size - fits in your pocket unobtrusively. The picture selection wheel is excellent - switching between modes is realy quick. Piture quality is fantastic. Only slight niggle is the battery catch which feels on the flimsy side, but don't let that put you off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony DSC-W70, 24 Jul 2006
By E Hemingway (Caribbean) - See all my reviews
Quite possibly the best point and click camera on the market at the moment. Excellent picture quality. Very user friendly - the on screen menu guide is great for camera novices. Large screen for reviewing shots. Small but stylish - easily hides in your pocket. Would recommend this camera to anyone.
