A minor league British rock/psych band chiefly remembered for the outstanding 1969 single Cast a spell b/w Magic potion, the Open Mind somehow found themselves the recipients of an album contract with Philips that same year.

While the album certainly has its moments and benefits from a decidedly eccentric Fritz Fryer & Johnny Franz production, it is the obscene rarity which generates most interest nowadays. There's very little here which hints at psychedelia although at times it is vaguely reminiscent of the American act Savage Resurrection.

This new reissue from Sunbeam offers the non-album 45 and an earlier single issued as the Drag Set as bonus tracks, but sadly the sound quality is shockingly poor as they have been mastered from low grade vinyl. Even the album mastering is shabby, with obvious deterioration on tracks towards the end of either side of the original vinyl. Copies of the earlier vinyl-only reissue on Antar are vastly superior and not that difficult to find.

The Open Mind's sole album is one of the heaviest examples of the so-called freakbeat of the late 1960s. Though it's easy to tag it as 'psychedelia', there is little evidence here that illegal substances were at work. Only the classic, fuzz and wah-drenched 'Magic Potion' suggests otherwise. It is this bonus track and its flip, 'Cast A Spell', which are the main attractions. They sound similar in style to the album tracks, but possess a white-hot intensity lacking elsewhere.

The album grows on you, but most of the songs are taken at a similar medium tempo and in a similar key. Not surprisingly, it's the aforementioned single that always crops up on psych compilations. The third bonus track, 'Day And Night' is also impressive. Only the unaccountably soft 'Get Out Of My Way' poops the party.

the LP is fantastic but the down side is the two bonus tracks do not appear on the LP nor is the single with them on
