Yes, it really is that simple

Talk about simple. The portable StreetPilot c510 comes ready-to-go right out of the box with preloaded maps and plenty of options. Sold exclusively in Europe, this navigator delivers the same, easy-to-use, affordable navigation as our popular selling c300 series with many enhancements like optional FM TMC traffic alerts, plus much more.

New c500 series FeaturesIn addition to the simple touch-screen display found in previous versions, both the StreetPilot c510 along with its counterpart, the StreetPilot c550, come loaded with new c500 series features including:

High-sensitivity GPS receiver provides faster acquisition times and maintains signal under heavy foliage and near city skyscrapers

Automotive-grade, sunlight-readable, anti-glare display makes it easier to see where you're going

Streamlined design creates a slimmer, more refined shape

Configurable vehicle icons allows you to select a fun, customized car-shaped icon that displays when autorouting

Garmin Lock" anti-theft feature that disables the unit from performing any functions until you type in a specific 4-digit PIN or take the unit to a predetermined location.

GPS Navigator

The c510 comes preprogrammed with regional European map data, and includes automatic routing, and 2D or 3D map perspective, making navigation easy. 5.0 out of 5 stars Bargain Purchase, 26 Feb 2007
By Monty (Worcestershire, UK.) - See all my reviews
This was my first Sat Nav and I was a bit apprehensive about what type to purchase as the market offers so many.

I needn't have worried though, from the moment you take it out of the box everything is so easy. I am really impressed with all the different features, I really didn't expect such a reasonably prices item to offer so much. It doesn't matter where you are, you can find shops, petrol stations etc, ideal if you are on holiday and don't know the local area. You can save personal locations in the favourites menu...again so easy. It even has a warning when you are in a speed camara zone...brilliant.
I would recommend this to anyone, in fact my pal went and bought the same model within the first week of seeing my Sat Nav.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, but beware memory limitations, 5 Jan 2007
By Mr. S. J. Calder "stuart6069" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This is an impressive and intuitive product - easy to operate via the touch screen, and with a very clear display, especially the 3-D mode. Using postcodes doesn't always pinpoint the exact destination, but that is a limitation in the postcode system, not this product. The device is also easy to remove from its mounting when you don't want to leave it in sight of prying eyes.

If you only want to navigate around the UK, then I can highly recommend it, and you need read no further. If you plan to use it in Europe, however, then please read on.

The reason I have given only 4 stars is the limited memory with the standard product. I bought this under the impression that it covered the whole of Europe out of the box. Not quite true. My suspicions were aroused when I tried to type in 'Paris' as a destination and it failed to recognise it. The reality is that maps for the whole of Europe come on the accompanying DVD, but the C510 device doesn't have the capacity to store them all at once. It has 240MB of memory, which covers UK and Ireland with around 20MB to spare, but if you want to load up, say, France, you have to connect up to your PC (easy enough to do, via a standard USB port) then use the accompanying software to remove some or all of the UK maps before downloading the France maps.

My solution was to buy an SD expansion card. A 1GB card cost me around £13 including postage, which I can live with. This is not a Garmin product - mine is a Toshiba, but there are numerous other makers (they can be used in other devices such as digital cameras.) You just plug this into the slot in the side of the C510, where it neatly clicks into place and doesn't protrude. This increased the memory to the point where the whole of Europe can indeed be downloaded at once, using the software provided (which is adequate without being fantastic.) It takes 1-2 hours to download the extra maps to the device, but then that's it.

I have yet to try it outside the UK, but it certainly finds destinations on the continent and works out routes to them, so I have no reason to doubt that it will work.

So, I have had a week of messing about, but am now happy with the result, and the recommendation stands, subject to the stated caveats.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 13 Jan 2007
By Mark Wightman - See all my reviews

Got one for Xmas (thank you Santa!). Delighted with it - very easy to use. The unit is well designed and seems very robust. Comes preprogrammed with everything you could need. Searches on place names, addresses, and post codes and also a searchable database of points of interest such as entertainment, parking, shopping centres, petrol, hospitals, etc., etc. Also extremely accurate and lets you know if you have taken a wrong turn almost immediately. I got the deluxe version that includes the lifetime subscription to travel alerts - already saved me quite a bit of time sitting in traffic jams. Recommended.
