My daughter wanted one of these for Christmas. It does take about 20 minutes to make and it is noisy but that just adds to the attraction for a seven year-old!

Two things to bear in mind:
1. The instructions are in American volume measures. Their pint is about 16 fluid ounces or 473 millilitres.
2. The whole business needs to be kept in the kitchen. We got a bit of sugar stuck in the lid thread and cream began to leak out!

The concept of this sounds great, make ice cream AND have fun at the same time, I must say that I havn't had any fun when using this. It's noisy and uses a lot of ice (I went through a 2kg bag last time) and is very likely to cover your kitchen in the mixture at the halfway point. After literally an hour of rolling round this ball with hotache on my hands I got very soft "ice cream" so it needed freezing immediately.

To say this cost me bout £25 I feel that a 'boring' plug in one would have made better ice cream and in a lot less time, the vision was good of people taking this so that they can make ice cream when they go camping or for a picnic or something like that, but if you have a cool bag to prevent the ice from melting and the cream to stay cool then wouldn't you just make ice cream at home?

With that in mind, the ice cream ball seems quite pointless, as it is neither fun or good at what it does. Oh well, at least I have a nice blue cocktail mixing ball (It suggests that is another use for it in the booklet provided, you just put your spirits in the metal cylinder), just a shame that's not why I got it.

I bought this as a birthday gift for my ice cream mad young son. He loved it and it really does make extremely good ice cream simply and quickly. The ball is also very easy to clean afterwards. However, it does take quite a lot of chipped ice to fill the outer chamber and because of this I cannot imagine, as the advertising blurb suggest, that you could use it whilst camping or on a picnic!? Unless of course your bultler has kindly lugged along your solar powered Smeg for the occassion...
As a simple fuss free way of making ice cream I rate this 5 stars, I just think that unfortunately the advertising depatment got a little carried away with themselves which could cause disappointment.

Wouldn't take it camping unless you have easy access to ice cubes!
Watch for leaks, be prepared to finish the process by putting it in the freezer. Read more
