5.0 out of 5 stars From 'Sumer is a-coming in' to Britney? Thompson plays pop!, 6 July 2006

What a revelation this is. This pack should be on the National Syllabus - how music has evolved over 1000 years, how everything influences and connects to what will come after - it just takes one great natural musician to pull everything together into a marvellous performance. A Gilbert & Sullivan duet is given a lusty re-working, Thompson singing with startling gumption! Britney's 'Ooops...' is even more inspired, and worth the price of admission alone. Once you've heard this, you'll be playing it over and over, and not just because of the disbelief that RT - yes, HIM - is playing THAT! It really is this good.

This DVD/CDs combination is a hugely entertaining and educational treasure. Unique and beautifully produced. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not essential but certainly enjoyable, 13 Aug 2006

If you are one of the millions of hardcore Thompson fans then any release is going to meet with a reflex purchase. So, I assume if you are reading the reviews for this item then you have some reservations about this DVD.

If I had to do it again, I'd probably rent this DVD rather than purchase it. My main reason for feeling this way is that Thompson takes us on a very worthy but at times arduous trawl through 1000 years of popular music. Nothing can be faulted in his performance but I did find myself scanning the (excellent) liner notes and counting how many more tracks I had to get through before the end of the DVD, not exactly a strong recommendation on my part.

Thompson is a fantastic musician (in the widest sense of the word) and his translation of orchestral pieces to the guitar, for example a Gilbert and Sullivan piece, is nothing short of astonishing. But is it entertainment? You will probably be impressed but I wonder how often you'll want to sit down and watch the concert again.

It is much to Thompson's credit that I cannot think of another musician alive who could possibly attempt this highly ambitious task. Much better as edutainment than entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars richard thompson surveys and plays a 1000 years., 27 Jun 2006

I obtained a copy of the CD some while ago from Richard Thompson,s beesweb site, following superb reviews in all of the music press. Now comes this set,a DVD and double CD, If your not aware of Richard Thompson then you really are missing one of the greatest singer/guitarists Britain has ever produced. This live set features Thompson, with just Judith Owen (vcls/keyboards) and
Debra Dobkin(percussion/vcls). The range of songs will leave you stunned in it's variation from medival music through standards
like Cry Me A River and Shenandoah, through music hall songs such as I Live In Trafalgar Square,to Gilbert & Sullivan's Mikado. Then onto rock n roll Drinkin'Wine to the Kinks See My Friends,to
Squeezes Tempted, not to mention Britney Spears Ooops I Did It Again, Yes, folk, rock, pop, jive, opera, madrigals, standards,I could go on and on,but this is without doubt one of the great releases
of the year by one of our greatest talents, and in concert.
It's quite a year for RT fans what with the awesome box set,and now this wonderful release.Do yourself a favour and treat
yourself, you will not be disappointed.FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY...and more.
