DVD Description

David Mitchell and Robert Webb's riotous comedy show, The Mitchell and Webb Situation, gushes forth an hilarious stream of surreal and quirkily inventive sketches self-penned by the talented duo. Originally made for UKTV’s much missed channel, Play uk, its cult success catapulted the stars into their acting roles in Channel 4's hugely successful – and Bafta-nominated – Peep Show.

With their comedy-writing developed as members of the prestigious Cambridge Footlights group (where past performers include Peter Cook, John Cleese and Stephen Fry), and honed with a series of two-man shows on the Edinburgh Fringe, Mitchell and Webb have continued to shell out pure comedy gold.

Special Features

• New exclusive audio commentary (episode 1) by Mitchell and Webb • New video interview with Mitchell and Webb (in a park) • Out-takes

5.0 out of 5 stars A great situation to be in..., 25 Feb 2006
By isis 1958 (Pendle) - See all my reviews

I was motivated to write after reading an earlier, somewhat negative review. This is brilliant. It precedes "Peep Show" by about 3 years and, by the look of it, was recorded on a relatively low budget. Add that to the fact that it rolled out on UK Play and you have a complete recipe for a hidden gem.

The sketches come thick and fast - part parody, part satire and, most definitely, part Python. But it still feels current. A couple of popular TV shows get the M&W micky-take, as do many aspects of our popular culture. At the same time number of characters/themes reapppear at different times throughout the shows often building to an hilarious, simple, devastating punchline. Some of the sketches don't work as well as others, but in reality they are never really around long enough to become boring before the next one takes over.

Olivia Colman deserves a mention too, often providing a foil to the other two with impeccable timing.

David Kerr's direction of a Hitchcock-esque poisoning is also worth a mention as it's worthy of an Oscar in itself. Lighting and atmosphere superb.

Flawed at times yes, but comic genius in ascendency. I think if you can't find plenty to laugh at in here you have spent your life in misery at he bottom of a drain!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting First Steps For Peep Show Duo, 28 Feb 2006
By Mr. P. Birtwistle "Philip Birtwistle" (Clitheroe) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As the cover blurb says : "Before `Peep Show` there was........." a sketch based show from the team responsible for the Channel 4 hit. A running gag based sketch show, similar in style to The Fast Show, Little Britain or any of the others that proliferate these days, the show features all the elements that made you either love or hate each of those shows.

The sketches are mostly short, and sprint by in a hit or miss fashion, some scoring highly, others barely registering at all. Thankfully the two stars maintain a better average than some of the other series in this style, and you can clearly see where the duos later success came from. The running gags frequently tend to run for an episode rather than over the whole series, which helps keep things moving beter, and makes the sketches less predictable. Classic moments scattered throughout include the two scriptwriters battling with nursery rhymes, the Seven Wonders Of The World and The Bible, genuine laugh out loud comedy, the miserable wife pub sketches and the upper class yobs sat around a pub table discussing acts of random violence they have carried out.

Occasionally the out and out silliness of some of the sketches grates, but equally this can also work in their favour sometimes, showing that humour works well on all levels. Maybe a little less bad language would help, as some will find this off-putting I'm sure.

Overall though, the DVD is very good, assembled nicely by Eureka! With an interview added on, as well as a commentary (sadly only on one episode) along with a very funny outtake from the introduction to the commentary, this is well worth taking a chance on.

2.0 out of 5 stars very disappointing, 4 Mar 2006
By O. Prosser (Bristol) - See all my reviews
If you liked Peep Show and are expecting the same kind of comedy genius, don't buy this.

Both David Mitchell and Robert Webb are talented comic actors and always make the usual lame panel shows worth watching but this show does not do them justice. Some of the sketches are inspired but most play out far too long. Any good one-liners are lost due to the poor editing of the show which is a real shame. Unlike several other sketch shows which are saved by great performances, the quality of the acting is variable and The Mitchell and Webb Situation never quite manages to convince. The dvd is not redeemed by interesting extras - a short interview and a commentary for the first episode are all we get and this certainly does'nt make up for the disappointment.

I did not anticipate much from this as its an early work where you would expect them to be learning the comedy biz and for it to be a bit clunky, but it was cheap enough to make... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
I think that many people won't find this funny as it doesn't have a laughter track to provide a cue. I also think this is Mitchell & Webb's best work so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some moments of genius...
