  • The Game

The idea is to buy and rent or sell properties around the board. Starting from "GO" players move their tokens around the board according to the throw of the dice. When a player’s token lands on a space that’s not already owned, they can buy it from the bank, otherwise it is auctioned off to the highest bidder. The object of owning property is to collect rent from any other player that lands there. Rent is increased by the erection of houses and hotels, so it is wise to build them on some of your properties. Community Chest and Chance spaces give the draw of a card, instructions on which must be followed. Sometimes players land in Jail! The game is one of shrewd and amusing trading and excitement.

    Parlez-vous MONOPOLY?

    The History

It was 1934, the height of the Depression, when Charles B. Darrow of Germantown, Pennsylvania, showed what he called the Monopoly game to the executives at Parker Brothers. Can you believe it, they rejected the game due to "52 design errors"! But Mr Darrow wasn't daunted. Like many other Americans, he was unemployed at the time, and the game's exciting promise of fame and fortune inspired him to produce it on his own.

With help from a friend who was a printer, Mr Darrow sold 5,000 handmade sets of the game to a Philadelphia department store. People loved it! But as demand grew, he couldn't keep up with all the orders and came back to talk to Parker Brothers again. The rest, as they say, is history! In its first year, 1935, the Monopoly game was the best-selling game in America. And over its 65-year history, an estimated 500 million people have played!

The Monopoly game is so much a part of today's popular culture that lawyers have trademarked many of its graphic elements. The Tokens, Railroad, Community Chest, Chance, and Title Deed designs, as well as the original Boardwalk and all four gameboard corners are legally protected.

    And Now?
Nowadays Monopoly is sold in 80 countries and published in 26 different languages. The current line includes Monopoly Nostalgia Edition, Monopoly Junior and Irish Monopoly as well as some great licensed versions of the game. These include Simpsons Monopoly, Star Wars Monopoly, Monopoly Lord of the Rings, Duelmasters Monopoly, Thunderbirds Monopoly and the great new Disney Monopoly.

The classic game was recently brought up to date with a fantastic 70th Anniversary Limited Edition version called Monopoly Here & Now which is available in both UK & Irish versions!

5.0 out of 5 stars Football Fantastic!, 6 April 2006

For any football fan this game is great! Obviously right in time for the World Cup, it's much like the original Monopoly game but with a cool football twist. I have played it a few times with friends and they all love it.

Playability is classic but instead of houses and hotels you get to buy stands and stadiums. There are manager and referee cards instead of chance and community chest. Stations are replaced by the stadiums and the countries do feature pretty much in order of their Fifa ranking (I checked!). Would have preferred England to be a bit higher but I guess the makers have to be fair.

The movers and football shaped dice are probably the coolest part of the game, although there may be few dodgy challenges over who gets to be the Golden Boot!

Great for fans and non-football fans alike, especially in World Cup year to keep the football fever going! Overall a fantastic game, highly recommended and well worth buying.

I like most football fans can't wait for the World Cup to start! And playing this football version of Monopoly was great for building our anticipation for the tournament especially as everyone was trying to be the first to buy England. The stadiums and terraces looked pretty cool and the golden boot mover was a nice twist!
