Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A new Madness album? Not only has The Dangerman Sessions emerged, but the appearance of the "Volume One" tag means that there will be more in store. And judging from the quality of this first volume, that’s good news indeed. Always unfairly pigeonholed as quirky near-comedy (an impression provided by their array of excellent hit singles, but a world away from the true sound of the band), the dearth of recent material has seen the band out of spotlight and out of favour; hopefully the punch of this album should help set the record straight on both counts.

In short, this is excellent. Satisfyingly bass-heavy, and suitably bouncy, Suggs’ familiar vocals make this equally familiar and unknown; even the familar sounds of The Supremes’ "You Keep Me Hanging On" and Desmond Dekker’s "The Israelites" sound re-invented - the latter most radically as a woozy, loping retooling. Everything else is certainly up to scratch, especially the string-laden "Rain" and the spunky "Taller Than You Are". In short, a brilliant and welcome return for a much missed band. --Thom Allott

CD Description

'The Dangermen Sessions Vol.1' sees Madness return six years after 1999's 'Wonderful', performing a selection of their favourite songs in their own unique ska style. The album features covers of ska and reggae classics such as Max Romeo's 'Chase The Devil', Prince Buster's 'Girl Why Don't You', andDesmond Dekker's 'Israelites', as well as reworkings of TheKinks' 'Lola' and Diana Ross' 'You Keep Me Hanging On'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shut up, listen, and dance!, 2 Aug 2005
By Mr. AJ Moore - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Being a Madness fan its hard not to be biased, but at the same time the thoughts are there, lurking away in the back of the mind that maybe Madness are just making a bit of extra cash from their ever loyal fanbase with this release-and after listening to this long awaited release its definately NOT the case!
After the intro track it kicks straight into a kicking version of Prince Busters 'Girl why don't you' which you just can't help 'skanking' too (also the case with 'taller than you are' and 'john jones').
Much justice is done to Desmond Dekkers 'Israelites' and a brassed up version of the Kinks 'Lola'...either of which, must be a radio friendly candidate for the 2nd single.
A highlight for me is the version of 'You keep me hanging on' which is a track that really shows how much effort has been put into this album of covers.
This album seems packed full of energy and gives you that summer buzz that only Madness music can.
Great effort boys....lets hope volume 2 is in the pipeline!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album of the year, no danger., 2 Aug 2005
By Mr. S. Wright (Banstead, Surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This ablum is an absolute revalation and should please Madness fans and old school ska fans alike. It's always been apparent that Madness have always had their roots firmly planted in ska traditions but their interpretation of it has always leant a little towards the pop side for many afficionados tastes. Well, no more! These 13 tracks are impecable versions of old standards. The sound and soul of these covers stand up to scrutiny and can stand proudly along-side recordings by the greats of old sounds system music such as Lloyd Terell, The Maytels, Don Drummond, Lee Perry and of course Prince Buster. Listen to "Ironshirt", "Taller Than You" and "Shame and Scandal" with your eyes closed and you can almost be back in the old dance halls of the late fifties, early sixties. This is fantastic stuff and arguably the best cover album ever. This should sell by the skip-load, but I fear it won't as it is a very niche genre and, let's be honest, Madness arn't the flavour of the month and havn't been for some time. But put your predudices aside, buy it. It'll be the best buy of the year. Trust me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just bloody fantastic!!!!!, 4 Aug 2005
By Sir John "Maskenfrosch" (Braunschweig (bei London)) - See all my reviews
No matter how many bad reviews one strange man writes - don't believe it!
This is a great return to top-form for the Nutty Boys! Shame & Scandal is a classic Maddy-style dance-tune, the versions of Lola and You Keep Me Hanging On are a smash, and the wonderful Rain is just awesome! Not to forget Iron Shirt - and just the whole bloody rest! Even though I can't wait to get new material from the guys one day (if you don't have the sadly underrated WONDERFUL - album yet - just get it SOON!!!) - there's nothing not to love about this album!
Great great stuff - don't leave us, lads, the world needs more Madness!
