Product Description

CD Description

The 10 pieces on Brian Eno's 1992 ambient collection THE SHUTOV ASSEMBLY were recorded between 1985 and 1990. In the intervening two years, however, artists such as the Orb and the KLF had placed Eno's concepts of ambient music into the context of dance music, creating ambient house, one of the '90s most important club trends. As a result, critical and public opinion of this album at the time was mixed-to-negative, with many complaints that the pieces broke no new ground. A single listen belies this statement, as THE SHUTOV ASSEMBLY is unique in Eno's ambient work. Several of the randomly titled pieces have a dark, vaguely disturbing cast far removed from the usual placidity of Eno's ambient work, while othersbring the world music aspects of some of Eno's other projects to the ambient sphere. THE SHUTOV ASSEMBLY is an intriguing and satisfying work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting..., 30 April 2009
By Diziet "I Like Toast" (Hull, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The Shutov Assembly was apparently an assembly of various bits and pieces that Eno put together for the Russian artist Shutov. So there you go.

It was never conceived of as a single work; it is a collection of disparate pieces with no obvious connecting theme - although many of the pieces refer to geographical locations. You can get more details from the entry in Wikipedia, so there's no point in going on about them here.

However, saying all that, the pieces do fall into place within Eno's overall work. Many of the pieces are, to me, reminiscent of 'On Land', with an overall dark, slightly malevolent, feel. They are more varied than 'On Land' and perhaps fall within the same ambience as 'Music for Films', used so effectively on Derek Jarman's 'Sebastiane'.

Of course, some tracks 'work' better than others. 'Lanzarote' is darkly beautiful, in contrast to the usual associations of such a location, while 'Francisco' just gets a bit irritating. 'Innocenti' has a magical misty landscape feel (reminded me a bit of the beautiful 'Dover Beach' from the film 'Jubilee'), 'Stedelijk' is more slow-motion industrial. 'Ikebukuro', the longest track on the album at 16 minutes plus, harks back to the dark, almost saurian feel of 'On Land'. 'Ikebukuro' is, apparently, a large commercial area of Tokyo. Well, there you go.

Overall, then, not great, not a good place to start if you've not heard Eno's ambient music before (try the classic 'Music for Airports' or the glorious 'The Plateaux Of Mirror'). Interesting and worth investigating if you're familiar with the Ambient pieces, particularly the later ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Gem ???, 16 Dec 2009
By J. Atkins - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a little gem thats often forgotten when Eno's cd's are discussed. Ok its not as tuneful and consistant as Apollo or On Land but it is comparable, in being 60m+ of that wonderful " Floating in Space " thing that Eno does like no other !! Its much better than Neroli or Tuesday Afternoon that were just TOO repetetive. I guess its most like the " Spacey floaty tracks" from the Music For Films series....only longer.(One 16m track IS a bit TOO long). So once you've got all the above cds, try this little gem..it IS a goody.
