5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly surpasses "Belle de Jour", 11 Sep 2005
Please don't get me wrong, "Belle de Jour" is a great movie and a personal favourite but I must admit that "Tristana" is in many respects the better of the two movies Buneul made with Deneuve. And Deneuve outdoes herself in what is surely her finest performance of all. Cruel, brutal and deeply cynical, "Tristana" has much in common with "Viridiana" and is equally as great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Battle of the sexes, 12 Oct 2009
Tristana was made in the midperiod of Bunuel's films between his masterpiece Viridiana and The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie. This was his second(and best)film with Deneuve(the other Belle de Jour).Fernando Ray also acted in a few Bunuelfilms. Here he is the ageing womaniser,Don Lopez, the aristocrat, who supports the poorest and weakest in society, but is anticlerical(won't allow a priest in his house),and exploits the virginal young ward,Tristana,by seducing her.He doesn't rape or force her but she reluctantly has sex with him in a free relationship. He has a housekeeper whose deaf mute son helps out.Don Lopez becomes fatherly and possessive as Tristana frees herself from his clutches. She runs off with a poor young artist(Nero) to Madrid.Don Lopez is a gentleman who doesn't believe in work(he sells his belongings),he only does things for pleasure. The film has many surrealistic touches(e.g. Tristana's dream of his head as a bell-clapper) which shows Bunuel's anti-clericalism and his anti-bourgeois beliefs. There is a battle for power going on between the sexes with Tristana dominating in the latter third of the film. The cinematography is excellent with many still shots of static frame, and sweeping shots cut short and golden, autumnal colouration, browns, yellows and whites. The changes in the relationship and the passage of time is all done perfectly. The cobbled, inclined, narrow streets of Toledo are perfectly captured in this 1920s set story(based on 19th century novel).I was impressed by Deneuve's acting intelligence and beauty.Rey too is remarkable. This is a good film to get a good 1st impression of Bunuel with a well told story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dark tale, 14 May 2009
By Cassie Walker (London, UK) - See all my reviews
"Tristana" is a dark tale about power and (in)dependence in relationships. It starts off well, and with nice portrayals of the characters, but in the latter half of the film Deneuve's increasingly petulant performance meant that in the end I felt more pity for the Don Lope character than I think I really should have. Nonetheless, the scene on the balcony where Tristana reveals all to the deaf-mute Saturno shows that Deneuve can get it spot on at times. This movie's plotline is straighter than that of say "Belle de Jour", so in some ways it may be the best film to start with if you are new to Bunuel's work.
