Amazon.co.uk Review

Stereophonics' fifth album will inevitably provide more material for the band's critics, if only for the fact its title has clearly been rather lazily inspired from the back of a rental video case. The music within, however, is anything but laid-back: the employment of Argentinean drummer Javier Weyler, who replaces founding member Stuart Cable, sees the band venturing further along the hard-rock path that spawned previous denim-and-leather-clad tracks like "Moviestar". The first three tracks find frontman Kelly Jones is in downbeat mood, his vocals drawled and insouciant, and his lyrics distinctly sour--take the raging "Doorman", where he rails against some faceless bouncer with surprising and rather paranoid ferocity: "You like nothing more than to break my face/ You like to throw me out on the street!". Things sweeten towards the album's middle, providing two of the album's stand-out tracks: the chiming, electronic-tinged "Dakota" is a light, buoyant anthem that deserves to be a hit, while "Rewind" is a reflective moment that pricks memories of mid-period U2. But on the whole, Language. Sex. Violence. Other? isn't an album out to win new fans – it's an album that caters to the Stereophonics' rock faithful, and it's them who'll really dig it. --Louis Pattison

CD Description

Fifth studio album from Welsh rockers Stereophonics. This is the follow-up to 2003's 'You Gotta Go There To Come Back' and features drummer Javier Weyler making his debut following the departure of Stuart Cable. Produced by Jim Lowe and lead singer Kelly Jones, the album is crammed full of catchy pop tunes, smooth guitar riffs and beautiful ballads. The singles 'Dakota' and 'Superman' are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Language. Violence. Sex. Other? Buy. It., 14 Mar 2005

i am long serving phonics fan, seen the band evolve into different things some good and some bad. This album is edgier and rockier than the past 2 albums, so can be compared to Performance & Cocktails as its bigger brother because the majority of tracks are a bigger sound. The album starts with 'superman' which gets your foot tapping and head rocking with Kelly's unique vocals and a raw guitar riff. The album progresses onto track 5 with 'Dakota' which was the first single and probably a good choice. If all you've heard is dakota then think darker and edgier and if you like the sound of it then go and buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock on, 3 Mar 2005

I managed to get hold of an advanced press copy of the finished album - and let me tell you this is Stereophonics best work.

It is a lot rockier than their previous albums (check out the guitar riff in the middle of song 2 - it gives the legendary Guns N Roses a run for thier money!), but for me that was a good thing.

The problem with their third album, JEETP, was the screeching vocals, with dull music. Not so here. The vocals are catchy, particularly on song 4, and stay in your memory. You won't find yourself getting annoyed with any song, rather wanting to hear it more.

If anything, it was too short, and I wished I could spend more time with the music - instead, I just put the album on repeat!
By far their best, loudest and rawkiest album yet! It made me want to thrash my air guitar around the street with my headphones on.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the critics faces, 3 Jun 2005
By J. Potten "teddapots" (Eastbourne, East Sussex) - See all my reviews

The Phonics are back to their best, giving the critics what for after their highly criticised fourth ablum. This album, both with racing and mellow songs shows how much the band has developed in terms of musical ability. In contrast with their first 2 albums of basic indie pop brilliance, the new album has an underlying class about it, putting other bands to shame. Pumping tracks like Dakota, Superman, Devil and Pedalpusher get your feet tappings, and chill out songs like Lolita give a mix that makes a great album. If your a Phonics fan this is a must, if not, this is a must! Bring on a Greatest Hits!!

There's some great stuff on this. Some of it's a little poppy, like Dakota, but for all out ball crunching rock, take a listen to Deadhead or Devil - Devil's just superb. Read more
