The Best of??? Maybe..., 28 Dec 2004
Mandy Moore was a pop starlet who emerged around the time the world was getting to grips with the britney/christina phenomenon. She never really achieved notice here in the UK, a couple of tracks were released as singles but in an already saturated market of female pop singers, she disappared in the UK. Which is a shame but this greatest hits package although only available on import, is a great opportunity to see just how much she has changed direction. This collection records the way Mandy has changed from pop starlet to more serious singer over the past five years. Running in chronological order, the collection starts with her britney sound for the first couple of tracks, 'candy, walk me home and so real' its with the next track, 'i wanna be with you' that the subtle shift in sound begins to show. The tracks which follow this are from the self titled second album, 'in my pocket and crush' The move from pop to indie lite shows and the change is remarkably effective. The tracks which follow this 'cry and only hope' come from the movie 'a walk to remember soundtrack' and again show how she is moving into a more mature sound. However its the tracks from her last album from Sony (coverage) which show the completion of her transformation from pop puppet to serious singer. The covers, have a little faith in me, can we still be friends, senses working overtime and i feel the earth move,work well and continue her move into a more rocky feel, which is slightly lighter than say, kelly clarksons' second release, but works well alongside it. The final tracks on this collection are tracks from to soundtracks she contributed to 'on top of the world' from stuart little and 'secret love' from Mona Lisa Smile. As a collection of a singers work, it sounds on first listen a mish mash of different styles but, it also shows the gradual change of direction that Mandy was taking. This is her last album from Sony and she is now signed to another label, but hopefully she will continue to produce songs in the direction she is now taking. The dvd which is also with this album, is worth the price, with promtional videos and AOL Sessions its worth checking out. I gave this four stars because it could have been improved with some new songs added to it. That aside however, its a strong collection and shows just how much Ms Moore is vocally capable of, and long may that continue.
