Synopsis

Arnold Schwarzenegger is perfectly cast as Quaid, a 2084 construction worker haunted by dreams of Mars in this crowd-pleasing science fiction spectacle. Against the wishes of his sexy blonde wife (Sharon Stone), Quaid goes to Rekall, a company that implants artificial memories, so he can 'remember' visiting the red planet that is now being settled by human inhabitants. However, Quaid is actually an amnesiac secret agent from Mars--or is he. Enemy agents led by a thug named Richter (Michael Ironside) start trying to kill him before Quaid remembers anything more. Bullets and bone-crunching mayhem follow in large doses as Quaid heads to Mars to deal with mutants, ancient alien races, and Cohagen (Ronny Cox), a greedy capitalist controlling the colonists' air supply, in an effort to remember his real identity. TOTAL RECALL is based on the story 'We Can Remember It for You Wholesale' by Philip K. Dick and was a big box-office hit, helping to firmly establish director Paul Verhoeven as a specialist in darkly satiric, blood-drenched genre films. His next stop: BASIC INSTINCT, also with Stone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Brilliant, 12 Dec 2008
By G. R. Donaldson (Great Britain) - See all my reviews

Apart from the Terminator this is big Arnie at his baddy bashing best. This film,Black Book, Starship Troopers and Basic Instinct all remind us that Showgirls was a temperary blip on Paul Verhoevens impressive directorial CV. The thundering introduction theme, the ultra violence, the special effects, crazy Michael Ironside running about the place trying to waste the big man. Added to which we have a high kicking Sharon Stone and Ronny Cox as a great slimeball villain. Great Sci Fi movie. Eat your heart out Sylvester Stallone. Buy this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality of sound and picture are excellent, 7 Sep 2007

One has to wonder if the reviewer who wrote his review 23 Jul 2007 actually is writing about the same DVD.

My review is in relation to ' Total Recall (2 Disc Special Edition) ' ASIN: B0002VF5SO

My only Complaint is that the aspect ratio is 1.85:1 Anamorphic and not 2.35:1 which I prefer.

Apart from that the quality of sound and picture are excellent and the menus are very amusing.

taken the above into account and the price which is under £ 6 really its a Bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Arnie's best films, 1 April 2006
One of Arnie's best films, I think. The thing about Total Recall is it makes you wonder what's real and what's not. Did Douglas Quaid really go to Mars or is it all just an implanted memory. The film looks as good now as it did when it first came out. The sets and special effects are great. It's quite gory and violent too. I heard that it was actually cut down a lot to avoid an X rating in the US. There's plenty of special features to view on the disks. Plenty of featurettes and galleries. There's commentaries too which I haven't listened to yet.
