3.0 out of 5 stars Floor Killer Fodder Maybe?, 24 Oct 2008
By William T. Luther (Hamilton Twp, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Like the first volume there is sadly an overabundance of mediocre note for note attempts at U.S. 60's soul covers, which in most cases is uninspiring. Volume Two suffers from this the most. It does offer thirty tracks (whilst Volume Three offers a meager fourteen). It does kick off with the brilliant "Can't Stop" by The Senate , a number produced by the legendary Ben E. King whom the band backed during a British tour. It's probably the first CD issue of this amazing soul number which in itself isn't a bad investment! However there's a few gems here: Terry Reid with Peter Jay's Jaywalker's brilliant "This Time" (flipside of the excellent "Hand Don't Fit the Glove"), the psychedelically named Happy Magazine with the punchy soulful "Satisfied Street" (from '68), Liverpudlian beat refugee Kingsize Taylor with a smooth ballad called "Thinkin'" (pinched off of one of the "Chocolate Soup" CD's) and the legendary Alex Harvey with his take on "Agent OO Soul". Next to the opening track the stand out of the bunch is "You Never Came Home" by The Bunch, imagine what The Blue Flames would've sounded like if Eric Burdon joined them in '66 when Georgie Fame gave them the sack and you've got this number sewed up. Hopefully someone will see fit to issue it's equally charged flipside "We're Not What We Appear To Be". As for the rest... well suffice to say if you have a pretty basic soul collection you won't lose any sleep missing out on the British renditions included here. Further pics: The Studio Six with "I Can't Sleep", Linda Lewis and her (expensive if you've got the 45)version of "You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet", Miki Dallon (the man behind The Sorrows and Don Fardon) and his take on "Cheat And Lie" and Jackson & Smith's namedropping "Party '66" which sounds rather like Keith (Powell) & Billie (Davis) , but I can find no information connecting them to "the home counties Rufus & Carla" (and a big raspberry on whoever tagged them that!).

2.0 out of 5 stars New Directions Vol 2, 8 Dec 2006
Despite the obvious rarity of these tracks, this comp from Past & Present doesn't cut the mustard. I'm not entirely sure if this comp is Mod or Northern Soul - some of these artists like Alan Brown or Sonny Burke can be found on Mod Collections but Linda Lewis (?). Anyway, there's nothing on here that leaps out at you - I suppose Alex Harvey doing Edwin Starr's Agent OO Soul is a curio but quite frankly Edwin Starr does it a whole lot better. Sleeve notes - forget sleeve notes there aren't any - dates - dream on - and the cover wouldn't look out of place on a condom box. If you want Mod, then you're better off with the Doin' The Mod series. From what I could gather searching through my trusty record collector much of this stuff seems to be b-sides - and they sound it. To be fair, there are probably many vespa riders out there dancing to this right now so you have to congratulate Past & Present for digging deep inside someone's vaults. But - well put it this way Vol 2 doesn't encourage me to track down Vol 1.

2.0 out of 5 stars More like Lost Directions! , 28 Dec 2007
New Directions 2 I have to say is a let down compared to the superlative volume 1! From the packaging, which I have to concur with the previous review resembles a jonny box(!) to the all important track selection, New Directions 2 appears to have been compiled in a rush without any degree of passion, or imagination. The songs fail to capture the true essence of underground blue eye mod soul. To be honest, you would be better off checking out some of the other Northern Soul/Mod comps such as the fab GO Go Train series, and even the super Mod Scene comp released on Decca Records a few years back.
