5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite Family Film, 14 Jul 2004
By A Customer
Based on the childhood memoirs of Marcel Pagnol, the writer responsible for Jean De Florette and Manon des Source (novels made into two of the most beautiful films ever made), this film is exquisite. A wonderful story, with strong performances, a superb script, and add to that some breathtaking Provence scenery, you have as perfect a film as could ever exist. This is one you could watch again and again. An unforgettable film to share with family.Charming, delightfully funny and rich in life-affirming messages. Proof of the importance of strong family bonds and the long-term benefits of shared holidays which shape our lives and our relationships. I had bought the sequel at the same time (Le Chateau de Ma Mere), and was glued to the telly for an entire afternoon. Best investment in DVDs I have ever made. I will treasure them always, and so will you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Purity of Innocence, 29 Jun 2006
I think this is how I would qualify this film! Purity of Innocence! Pagnol has written very honest and sincere chapters of his life in La Gloire de Mon Pere, Le Chateau De Ma Mere, Le Temps des Secrets and Le Temps des Amours. These are all master piece of french literature but La Gloire de Mon is by far the best of the four books! I watched this in the 90's and just bought it again and it made me relived the innocence of my childhood. The movie is as good as the book and the characters are flawless! Marcel's dad, mum and Petit Paul have been cast exceptionally well and the oncle Jules is definitely a delight. But above all it is about the valleys, the hills, the fields, the food, the holidays, the retreat in the hills and friendship... But most importantly about the mesmering landscape of the Southern of France .... The director does a very good job in leading the cast through the world of Pagnol and follows the book religiously. The only downside is that the translation is bang on the screen! This DVD should have the option of either with or without translation hence a 4 star .. else get ready to be lost in the world of Pagnol.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's wrong with escapism?, 26 Oct 2005
By G. Jolliffe "g3036" (Brixham UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a fine film of a book which is both tremendously enjoyable and full of wisdom about how families once worked as genuinely supportive and nurturing units. It's also poignant, funny and takes a wry look at self image and the world through the eyes of children. Rare qualities.

The beauty of the scenery, the elegance and wit of the direction and the underlying values combine to make this film a great piece of escapism for a while, and a lasting impression of yet another age lost to us. Sigh!
