Product Description

CD Description

Beneath the kooky persona she has projected in the past, Cyndi Lauper is a nice New York City girl with quite a set of pipes. AT LAST finds her revisiting the music she heard growing up in Ozone Park section of Queens and paying tribute tothese songs by way of unique arrangements. Going beyond thetypical route of solely dipping into the great American standards songbook, Lauper casts her net far and wide, coming up with material associated with Dionne Warwick, the Animals, and Edith Piaf.
Among her more imaginative renditions are the ska-fueled run through "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and the Latin-flavoured treatment of Maurice Williams' "Stay", featuring help from Sheila E. and a delightfully brassy horn section. Stevie Wonder also helps out, contributing harmonica to a jazzy "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)", a song originally recorded by Aretha Franklin and Tony Bennett, the latter who duets with Lauper on a late-night lounge version of "Makin' Whoopee". Working with the kind of stripped-down arrangements sympathetic to her keensense of range, AT LAST finds Cyndi Lauper finally coming home.

5.0 out of 5 stars See...Cyndi can sing!,, 8 Dec 2003
By Darren Raymond (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) - See all my reviews
"At Last" is the album that has finally made the masses realise what an incredible singer this woman is. I am known for being a huge fan and some of my friends dismiss her as a novelty act from the 80's. I have exposed them to this CD and the response has been universal. The main comment has been about what a wonderful singer she is and how surprised they are.

I host a program on a community radio station each week. I have been playing songs from "At Last" and the reaction has been amazing. When I played "Stay", I had people asking who it was singing (they loved it). Other presents who were at the station stopped talking and started listening, then singing. "Hymn to Love" garnered phone calls about what a beautiful song it was. In fact, each track has received a postive reaction.

The CD displays Cyndi vocal talents to the full. The musical arrangements are stripped back to basics (not overproduced thank goodness). Her voice is so full of emotion, I not only hear her sing the songs but I can feel her singing them.

Go and buy "At Last".

If you wonder where Cyndi has been since the 80's, go and purchase "Hat Full Of Stars" (1993), "Sisters Of Avalon" (1996) and "Shine" (2002). She has been producing fantastic music since the 80's. There just wasn't much publicity about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars grown up lass, 22 Nov 2003
this is an album that proves that all along Cyndi was more than a manufactured pop singer in the early years. Showing the depth of voice and style that was always there on the early albums, this album is a record that says singer and songs don't need hype or over the top marketing. Record companies take note..stop wasting time on disposable rubbish and become more green and invest in renewable artists! The title track At Last, says it all, power and control and a song that sends goosebumps up the skin..this is a girl having fun with real music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breath taking interpretations, 10 Dec 2003
By Bilu "Bilu" (Brasilia Brazil) - See all my reviews
I am absolutely astonished by ms. Cyndi Lauper's wonderful interpretations of these songs. She even made me love La vie en rose and unchained melody - songs I didn't appreciate much before, but she sings with such emotion, it's amazing.
