Amazon.co.uk Review

With A Tribe Called Quest stuck in a curious limbo (Hits, Rarities and Remixes arrives after their re-formation has been announced, but plans are still vague), stopgap releases are probably something of a help. After all, it's been five years since the group, once fêted by hip-hop die-hards, alt rock fans and style magazine readers simultaneously, last made a proper LP. And even that album, The Love Movement, did its best to sunder the consensus, with reviewers and fans divided on its complex merits. What is required now is a collection that showcases Tribe's greatest work, ready to reintroduce them to their old audience, and help them be found by a new one.

The thing is, Jive's excellent Anthology already exists, so this hotch-potch of remixes, two less-than-exhilarating unreleased tracks ("Mr Incognito" and "The Night He Got Caught"), sundry soundtrack fillers, what appear to be randomly selected album tracks and some singles does them little justice. At its best, this album contains some excellent music--it's impossible to fault classics like "Award Tour", "Oh My God" or the blistering posse cut, "Scenario". But those two unreleased tracks apart, there's nothing here to divert buyers from the superior and more satisfying Anthology. --Angus Batey

CD Description

While universally recognised as the cream of the hip-hop canon, A Tribe Called Quest may somehow be underappreciated. Expert jazz-hip-hop fusionists, Native Tongue poets, College Radio darlings, proponents of the Afrocentric movement, rap hitmakers; it's actually rather incredible to think of all the paths they've trod, even more incredible to think that Q-Tip was still sleeping on a relative's couch after multiple major label releases. HITS, RARITIES & REMIXES perfectly chronicles the group's memorable, witty, subtly crafted oeuvre, mixing up the hits with a couple of remixes and sharp new tracks.
The hits aptly display the breadth of the Tribe songbook, from the inexplicable and brilliant western road ballad "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo" to the swinging party of "Scenario". The schoolyard rhymes of "Check The Rhyme" rubs shoulders with the straightforward lyrical chops of "AwardTour" and the stone groove of "Electric Relaxation". On thenewly released tracks, Q-Tip and Phife trade off in classicstyle, balancing the playful with the gravely serious on "Mr. Incognito", while the Abstrac' relates a sly story on "The Night He Got Caught". HITS, RARITES & REMIXES handily documents the history of these prominent hip-hop innovators.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Tribe Called Quest - Hits, and some other stuff, 13 Jul 2003
If you call yourself a hip hop fan (someone who is actually part of hip hop, even if your just a supporter), you couldn't have gone through your life without tribe, it's a fact. And you know quest, for them not to get 5 stars, their must have been something tragic happened whilst composing an album. What happened with this is, it's just a greatest hits album. it has a couple of remixes, and two tunes which are unreleased.
That said, this purchase also comes with a DVD, which is really where the album comes into it's own. Their are 11 in total and they generally summarise Tribe's career. The only place where this CD went wrong is the fact that all the songs from the videos are put onto the audio CD, plus some more, which I dislike, but it's worth owning, just for the DVD alone, and that is the reason why I have kept it.
