Amazing band - Amazing man!, 24 Feb 2003
The first thing I noticed before I heard this album was that it was practically made entirely by one man; Tommy Walter from the Eels, which in itself is pretty amazing. So I wasn't expecting something of an amazing album from one man musically, but I was wrong, as it was an amazing album. Tommy's voice is truly powerful in this album and the sonically produced instrumental sounds is mesmerising, melodic songs dripping with slightly heavy hooks that take your attention and stay in your head for the remainder of the day. The 12 songs are packed with a punch of emotion and rock with pop, added in are a few techno-ish sounds, which bring the album to life. The Remedy : this was a song I was all ready familiar with as I had briefly encountered it on mtv2. It's a great pop-rock song with a piano sound that sticks into your head, its different and a pretty strong intro to an album. His voice seems facile which seems to blend in with the instruments remarkably.
Mercy Kiss : this song is a distorted, power driven pop-rock song. The guitars haunt in the backing and once again the song endures to you after your first listen. His voice is soaring in its sonic triumph, moulding it onto an amazing song.
Start Over : this song is one of the ones that brings his voice to life, he uses a tormenting high voice which seeps into your head and the instrumental arrangement soothes through with his voice making this yet another perfect song.
Monster : potent guitars overriding the chorus with synthesisers and meticulous vocals which build up with the weighty guitars, an extraordinary rock song.
Blood : a flowing, sensible pop hooked song, precious vocals and precautious instruments.
Surburban Muse : not one of my favourite songs on the album as it's a bit too melodically orientated, but still has its moments.
Sunny Day : again not the greatest songs on the album, but it has its catchy backing vocals, its more of a happy tune for car journeys. Its techno elements make it quite mesmerising as most of the tracks are. It reminds me of an Eels track as it has a happy mood and jumpy backing vocals.
L.V.B.D : its starts with power and continues to grow strong. Its has a familiar tune which Walter pulls off well. Its in your-face pop-rock with a strainful chorus. Distortion and a melody, enough to please a rock fan.
Ruin Your Life : first thing I can say is techno pop? It starts with a "lalala" which did unfortunately put me off most of this song, yet the vocals still stand strong and quite melancholy. It is catchy and once again a driving tune I think. It is arranged well and constructed to develop into a nice indie song.
Never : acoustic based tune with a piano, great, pacifying and calming. A great built indie tune. At times you think it should go a bit further than its current direction but it leaves you feeling satisfied.
Seed : this is my favourite song on the album most definitively. It uses rigid tendencies with a unique voice. The techno elements are built well and suite the song. Ripping distortion and a catchy tune. A different cadence and the song seems to just continually improve, the guitar wails but is kept in proportion by the synthesisers. Amazing!
Fluorescein : a great soft tune with a techno beat and powerful vocals. It's a great ending tune and builds up into a monster with a great vocal reach with the guitars, and before you can settle into the harder beat it changes, brilliant, and then it starts again but continues into a powerful tune. A great track to describe Abandoned Pools.
