Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Now on their seventh album, California Crossing, Fu Manchu should be on their way to grabbing more of the commercial rock spotlight; their clean, straightforward sound is spit-shined and ready for airplay. While not quite up there with Fu's 2000 epic King of the Road, California Crossing is a big-barrelled hybrid of sludgy guitars, mid-to fast tempo rhythms (with a couple of insane drum solos) and frontman Scott Hill's SoCal-driven vocals.

The album is the standard tribute to Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer, but similar to ex-bandmates Nebula, Fu Manchu adds Led Zeppelin-like classic rock influences to their music as well. With songs like "Squash that Fly" and "Mongoose" California Crossing is a well-fuelled album that should please fans of that grey area between heavy metal and hard rock. Jennifer Maerz

CD Description

'Calfornia Crossing' is Fu Manchu's eighth album and follows on from their critically acclaimed 1999 release 'King Of The Road'. Sounds of tuned down bass, fuzz guitars and heavy drum solos. Stoner rock influenced by Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll Over, 6 Feb 2002
Fu Manchu have always been about surfing, rocking, sandblasts and powerful music. Their riffs come from out of space and they embody the coolness of the Seventies with their powerful SoCal rock.

This new album is no exception. From Separate Kindgom to the Wasteoids what you get is the usual adrenaline-packed Chu album even if this time the California foursome are tuning the guitars a bit down.

The first choice for airplay is Squash that Fly. Pretty cool song, but watch out for future releases from this album: Thinking out Loud and California Crossing will definitely earn Fu Manchu many new fans.

However Kyuss aficionados will love "The Wasteoids": probably the best Kyuss-type song in a long, long while! It's a pity Brant Bjork (long time skinsman) left. However love the Chus!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Goddamn this plan has gone awry..., 17 Feb 2004
By Wayne Rocker (Scotland) - See all my reviews
Right, I'm not pretending to be a long standing Fu Manchu fan, as this is the first album by them I bought, but hopefully that means I'm reviewing this cd as a record in itself, and not just a follow-up.

And yeah, its a great bunch of songs, the best being 'Squash that Fly', 'Thinkin' Out Loud','Bultaco' and 'Hang On'.

Exellent driving music. if you like good simple rock, then you have to love this.

3.0 out of 5 stars It had to happen sometime, 30 Oct 2002
The 'Chu's latest offering came initially as a disappointment. The trademark fuzz and hair were missing, drummer Brant Bjork had departed, Scott Hill was actually trying to sing and the songs had bloody choruses!!!

Now being a Fu fan and owning all their previous albums you can forgive me for feeling this way but all isn't lost. The riffs are still there and are as catchy as ever, if not a little more polished. Tracks like Seperate Kingdom, Squash That Fly, California Crossing and the execellent Wastoid prove that they still have that old magic, Hang On and Thinkin' Out Loud sound too radio friendly and watered down for comfort.

Also Mongoose should never have been tampered with. Perfection cannot be bettered.

All in all California Crossing shows them moving towards mainstream accessibility and while that will gain new fans, will unfortunatly lead to losing some old ones as well.
