Amazon.co.uk Review

Short of having Guinness spilt down the front of your shirt and your ear bitten off by your girlfriend, Streams of Whisky is the closest the armchair shamrock insurrectionist can get to the full-tilt thrill of a live Pogues concert. Nevertheless, this recording--taken from a live festival in Leysin, Switzerland in July 1991--has purportedly been released against the wishes of the band. Sure enough, there is ample and not entirely pitch-perfect between-song banjo tuning and sundry "technical shit" (as Spider Stacey eloquently calls it) but these hitches only add to the ramshackle air of live authenticity. I mean, so what if the carnival brass is hopelessly out of tune on "Fiesta"? Surely that's the point. Even so, somebody should have hit the sound engineer over the head with a beer tray for the disastrous mix on "Young Ned Of The Hill" (certainly The Pogues' most under-appreciated song) for Terry Woods' longstanding grievances against Oliver Cromwell struggle to be heard above The Pogues' magnificent instrumental ballast (although the surplus, cod-reggae interlude remains a not-entirely essential oddity). No quibbles with the setlist, only the omission of "Fairy Tale of New York", for entirely practical reasons, stops this being the best of The Pogues. And just to debunk the myth that Shane MacGowan was The Pogues, the band sounds like an entirely different proposition when the diminutive Philip Chevron comes to the mic to sing his own Irish emigration saga " Thousands Are Sailing". Despite excellent sleeve notes from Sanctuary's factually accurate Alan Robinson, students of pedantry should note that Shane MacGowan's name is spelt incorrectly on the front cover and the track "Battle Of Brisbane" is actually "Repeal of The Licensing Laws". --Kevin Maidment

CD Description

Previously unavailable recording of a July 1991 gig in Leysin, Switzerland. It comes from the period following the issue of their studio album 'Hell's Ditch', and consequently contains versions of tracks from this collection. The Pogues went on to spilt in the early 1990's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not great by any means, but better than nothing, eh?, 22 Jan 2002
By A Customer
An official 'live' Pogues release is long, long overdue so perhaps one shouldn't really complain about the overall quality of this album. But it is all too sadly evident that in 1991 - the time of this concert - The Pogues were in a state of terminal decline: this live performance feels highly disjointed and one suspects that everyone on stage was busy concentrating on doing their own thing - consequently, nothing really gels and it is no surprise that MacGowan upped and left shortly after this concert was recorded... Still, this is the usual rowdy and raucous Poguetry, MacGowan's lyrics and vocals carry the usual bite and it's all driven by an intense energy. So, don't worry, be happy - and pour a glass or ten and sing-a-long with Paddy!!! Well worth the modest price...

This was very good value.

Some sound issues but it is a live recording and there is lots of concert atmosphere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dont bother, 16 Dec 2009

This is really an awful album, its been a source of much annoyance with the band as this was never meant to be released as it sounds terrible. I have to agree I bought a copy of this and was so disapointed with the mix that I gave the CD away free at a car boot sale along with a warning to the new owner that it really isnt worth listening too. If you want to hear a good live performance from the Pogues then get hold of the "Ulitmate collection" CD that has a bonus live CD taken from one of the gigs they played in 2001 at the brixton academy.
