4.0 out of 5 stars Fright DVD, 18 Dec 2003
This film brings the famous Minder partnership of George Cole and Dennis Waterman together for the first time. Susan George plays a baby sitter trapped with a physco on the loose intent on harming the baby. It is a very well crafted British horror film with excellent performances from Susan George and Ian Bannen. There are many jumpy moments and Hitchcock type film angles. The film suffers a little by its age (special effects) but the story and acting well makes up for the lack of gore in the murder scenes. It also boasts a haunting signature tune and excellent soundtrack(apart from the poor disco scene which is typical early 1970's.)An excellent addition for collectors of British Horror Films.

5.0 out of 5 stars A geat Susan George classic!, 27 Aug 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)

Susan George deservedly gets top billing in this thrilling masterpiece from 1971! The movie features a galaxy of other stars who are all outshone, and as a consequence, probably makes this George's greatest movie (some would argue Straw Dogs) Those of us old enough to remember, will know our very own Ms. George made so many great films at around this time, it is truly a difficult choice to make.

From the outset, George gives an award-winning performance as the terrified baby sitter left alone in a big old house whilst the 'twisted' ex-husband Brian (played by Ian Bannen) of Mrs. Lloyd (Honor Blackman) escapes from a Mental Institution. I can remember first seeing this movie many moons ago when it was first aired on TV, and it still sends the blood running cold when watched late at night! A very long time coming out on DVD, and only in the U.S., but beautifully re-mastered. This film boasts real quality on all fronts. and uses some great shots and Camera angles.

A couple of continuity errors; the Lloyds go out for the evening and it is completely dark when they leave, but when they return just a couple of hours later, it is distinctly light! Also, Mr. Lloyd tells Amanda - the baby sitter, that he and his wife have only lived in the house a couple of months; Amanda remarks that she knows of this from the village too. When the insane husband turns up, he's no stranger to the house, and claims to know it all so well, and there are also many flashbacks of he and his wife (before his committal) living in the house to back this up.

4.0 out of 5 stars More disquieting than frightening, 14 Oct 2008
By Mr. Jonathon T. Beckett "vampire lover" (Dracula's Crypt) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I remember watching this in the dead of night on ITV in the early 1980's. Now after a gap of around 25 years, I've watched it again.
Its a decent enough little thriller, and could be said to have influenced many babysitter in peril horror films. It does have a couple of genuine shocks, and the two central performances by Susan George and Ian Bannen as victim and tormentor are excellent. The sudden shifts between fantasy and reality, past and present in the mind of mentally ill Brian are also handled well.
There a couple of reasons that the film doesnt score higher with me.The scenes in the club/resteraunt(where some very dodgy dancing takes place) and the police station are not so good, and the film drags a bit when it leaves the pivotal location. George Cole gives an unusually wooden performance, but these are minor quibbles.
So, overall an interesting little thriller/horror the plot of which would become commonplace in the horror genre a few years later. 4 out of 5
The DVD transfer is of excellent quality
