Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Frequently--and rather unfairly--dismissed as a Pavement side-project due to the occasional involvement of that band's ex-vocalist Stephen Malkmus, the Silver Jews have long struggled to find their own voice in the American alternative-rock firmament. With their fourth album, Bright Flight, however, they may just have found it. This time, Malkmus is nowhere to be seen--off making arch pop mischief with his own band the Jicks--and David Berman, the soft, laconic voice behind the Jews has found the guts to really shine alone. Backed by a country band, built partly of Nashville old hands, this is surely the band's most conventional--and consistently listenable--album to date: 10 bright-eyed pedal-steel rambles through a slightly ragged, twisted modern Americana. Berman is on fine form, tossing wry rhyming couplets such as "I wish I had a thousand bucks / I wish I was the Royal Trux" into the ether with all the lazy, half-cut charm of Malkmus. His skill goes beyond simple wordplay though--the gorgeous "I Remember Me" is a tragic-comic narrative, where a man proposing to his beloved is flattened by a runaway truck. Many American bands are making records such as Bright Flight nowadays. Few, however, are doing it this well. --Louis Pattison

CD Description
'Bright Flight' is the fourth studio album from the Silver Jews. For the sessions, David Berman brought together musicians from the Nashville area, and those from his previous album, 'American Water'. A lo-fi country backing is added to his askew narratives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quiet Genius Flies Again, 5 Dec 2001
By peter.rockhill@disney.com (Guildford, England) - See all my reviews
David Berman's low-key cult breaks a 3 year silence after their alt-rock masterpiece 'American Water', another blues and country-influenced collection of angular, elliptical narrative gems. In many ways this new record repeats the trick. 'Slow Education' and 'I Remember Me' are unforgettable beauties: the latter tells of a man who wakes from a coma to find his lover long gone. 'Time will Break the World' reprises the more menacing moments of 'American Water'. Elsewhere there's a pronounced country feel, pastiche perhaps(Tennessee, Friday Night Fever), although some may tire of the honky-tonk by the end. The closing track may be an elegy for the late Rob Bingham, Berman's writer friend, also elegised on Stephen Malkmus' solo album earlier in the year (the song 'Church on White'). Malkmus did not join Berman on Bright Flight (as he has on previous 'Jews records). Instead, Berman recorded it with a couple of the old American Water band amongst others, on Berman's home turf of Tennessee. Watch out for classic Bermanese lateral thought: 'Blackhawks nailed to the sky...tape hiss in the trees...' His book of poetry, Actual Air (buy it on Amazon!) is full of the shifting, stunning prisms of thought you'll find on this record. Whilst Bright Flight isn't as consummately brilliant as its predecessor, for another antidote to the vapid disappointments all around us, check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars horseleg swatikas, 15 Sep 2005
lugubrious and with more han a hint of country, is not my normal cup of tea but if you take out the fillers - transylvania blues, let's not say... & friday night... - you are left with an incredibly powerful album that compares favourably with all their/his earlier work. perhaps they are a bit "heavier" than before but the lyrics are still poetic - what a surprise - and overall the 7 decent tracks could have appeared on their earlier albums. the Guardian reviewed it as Johnny Cash in a crypt, perhaps they should have added it is what young/dylan should be doing now - or am I biased ?

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 27 Dec 2006

(REAL NAME)
Im new to the SJ's - xams 2006 new! got this and 'tanglewood numbers' for xmas - both very good albums.

There are enough reviews here on amazon to inform you about Warren Berman and how fantastic his lyrics are - yes they are good, quite poetical - lots of references to water on this album. - havent really looked into that anymore - just something I noticed whilst listening to it.

I'll just say that if you are looking for something more sombre and paeceful then this is the better of the 2.

Dont be put off by the fact this is alt/country 'tagged'. It is a slower pace than tanglewood numbers which more upbeat with more guitar.

Howevr, this is not cheesy dolly parton or billy ray cyrus territory, which is what I know some music fans instantly think of when they hear the term country in music. This is just something i wanted to make clear to people reading these reviews after finding out about the Malkamus/Pavement link.

Once massive downside is that Cassie does not do more vocals on the album, the 2 voices complement each other perfectly and her sweet voice makes a welcome change to Bermans sombre (not depressing) masculine tone.

overall, very good and i cant wait to hear more of their stuff.
