The Cardiacs were formed in 1979. The style that they have established is manic melodic prog rock with elements of KingCrimson, Devo, XTC and Frank Zappa. This album consists of b-sides, and previously unreleased tracks.

It's a mixed bag of Cardiacs-related gubbins and to be honest most of the highlights will have been snapped up already on the many other sources filched for this compilation by the ever-most ardent audience that Cardiacs seems to draw.

But there are some nice little curio's inside, the Jon Poole song in particular is sublime. The thread of showcasing the mellower side of the various stinky-handed projects of current/former Cardiacs does hang together quite well. In particular, the Spratleys Japs and Sea Nymphs songs weave neatly between the Cardiacs songs, with the choices of Lake of Puppies and William Drake being more obviously oddball (but no less enthralling).

I never much liked "swimming with the snake" though, and like it's original placing on The Oceanland World it bloats around the middle of the CD mildly dampening the rest.

But hey, while it's certainly not a definitive or best of compilation, but it does become a very charming companion piece to the ubiquitously wonderful Greatest Hits album.
