5.0 out of 5 stars Like the 60s never happened, 26 April 2001
By A Customer
God only knows why some bands make it and some don't. This compilation of one of the finest bands to come out of Sheffield is long overdue and is a testament to how much of a loss they are as a band and to me personally. Featuring all of their singles and most of the B-sides too, this album shines so brightly in a sky full of today's manufactured pap. If you want to hear real pop, real tunes, real hooks and melodies then look no further. The titles were almost stories in themselves. "If I Were A Bullet Then For Sure I'd Find A Way To Your Heart", to give it it's full title, still sounds as fresh today as it was when it first appeared over a decade ago. And in "You Ungrateful Bastard" you'll find one of the greatest songs full of bitterness and anger. This album evokes so many memories of so many good times with a band I came to know and love in person aswell as on vinyl. I still hum their tunes today and you will too. If you can find it, hunt down their only UK album "Hey Man That's Beautiful". For lovers of 60s pop with a modern edge I can't recommend this compilation highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky titles - great songs, 5 Nov 2003
Former John Peel faves 1000 violins were a British psychedelia indie band of some note. Famed for their quirky titles, the band released only one Album on vinyl. Thanks to Vinyl Japan you can now hear their finest moments on this compilation. It encompasses all the singles and highlights including the wonderful "Please Don't Sandblast My House". Interestingly this compilation also illustrates that despite many line up changes, including three different lead vocalists, the quality never lets up. John Wood perculiarly sounds not unlike Marc Almond(Soft Cell) and sings on the majority of their work with real passion. Vince Keenan took over towards the end of the Violins "flower period" and led them into ever more stranger and wonderful psychedelic moments such as "All Aboard the Love-mobile". Guitarist and Violins Stalwart Colin Gregory sang on their sublime debut "Like 1000 Violins"

It is important to remember that 1000 Violins were doing their trippy, psycho, indie sound long before the likes of the Stone Roses had even been thought of. This compiliation is both a fitting tribute and fine testament to one of Britains most innovative bands. Buy it.
