Mick Hucknall might have begun his performing as a gravel-voiced punk shouter with The Frantic Elevators in 1979, but even then the first stirrings of an accomplished cosmopolitan talent were evident. An early Elevators' song "Holding Back The Years"--a poignant reflection on his childhood separation from his mother, re-recorded with Simply Red in 1985--presented Hucknall as one of the most potent balladeers of his generation. As this collection shows, it is a talent that he has maintained throughout Simply Red's career, both as an interpreter of genre-crossing standards ("Angel", "Night Nurse", "Ain't That A Lot Of Love") and original craftsman ("Stars", "It's Only Love", "For Your Babies"). Despite the line-up changes, a seamless poise and elegance has been the Hucknall hallmark--a winning blend of tenderness and resolve. Being a music fan of all different type of music,Simply Red have unleashed an album which is a cracker. It contains all the best of the best tracks produced by such a super group.

This greatest hits (plus extras) collection perfectly documents the band's 15-year career and, whether you love them or hate them, reminds the listener that they've produced some of the most polished coffee table MOR pop / soul around. Featuring sparkling gems like Stars, Holding Back The Years, Everytime We Say Goodbye, If You Don't Love Me By Now, Ghetto Girl and Ain't That A Lot Of Love, it's clear how far Simply Red have developed musically over the years.

My advice can simply be order this one now! All the best.

Simply Red started out as one of the most promising soul bands Britain had ever given birth to with 'Holding Back The Years' back in the mid eighties. Most critics would have agreed that only a band like Simply Red could even contemplate doing justice to an old classic like 'Every Time We Say Goodbye'. In recent years they have joined the dance music bandwagon and lost the pop melodies and soul that characterised their early music. 'It's Only Love' gives us an opportunity to listen to their remarkable decline for the first time on one album. From touching melodies like 'Holding Back The Years' (a song made even more beautiful on discovering it was written about the years Hucknall did not see his mother) and the respectful cover of 'Every Time We Say Goodbye' to empty, transitory dance floor beats like 'Ain't That A Lot Of Love', it is a journey that will convince you that they have completely sold out.
