Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Modest in both scale and sound, If I Could Tell You represents a less-elaborate, back-to-basics approach to music for an artist lately accustomed to staging Grand Statements (see Tribute). A straightforward, keyboard-based studio recording with minimal accompaniment, If I Could Tell You finds Yanni exploring a pleasant though largely unexceptional middle ground--less overtly romantic than his early 1990s bestsellers In My Time and Dare to Dream nor as boldly expressive as his rousing early releases. "Sacred Ground" opens the disc with a choir of electronically treated voices chanting ethereally over gentle rhythms and Native American flute, followed by the flamenco-tinged minor drama of "The Flame Within". Yanni's most interesting ideas arrive at mid-disc, starting with the harmonic tribal chanting on the rhythmic "Wishing Well", followed by a pair of agreeable romantic-dramatic forays on piano and keyboards ("A Walk in the Rain", "Highland"). Yet compared to Yanni at his expressive best, these selections and others that follow convey a surprising neutrality. Not that this music is objectionable. The stately romantic piano found on "In Your Eyes", for example, is graceful and appealing. Overall, though, the mood here is tame, reserved--and here's that word again--modest. After a three-year wait following the globe-girdling Tribute, this approach is a bit of a surprise. --Terry Wood

CD Description

IF I COULD TELL YOU isn't a great departure for Yanni; it'ssimply a collection of instrumental pop tunes bound to please those already tuned in to his wavelength. "On Sacred Ground" opens with a synthesized wash of orchestral/choral sounds before moving into a syncopated groove, while "The Flame Within" is based around Yanni's piano, adding a little Greek flavouring in deference to the composer's background.
Conversely, the ballad "With an Orchid" pursues a somewhat Asian feel, as Yanni's keyboards emulate both the Japanese koto and shakuhachi. "In Your Eyes" begins with the atmospheric sounds of a waterfall, segueing into a semi-classical piano meditation that eventually gives way to a more Yanni-like poptreatment. Things wind to a close with "Reason for Rainbows", which opens gently with what sounds like hammered dulcimer and gradually expands to encompass choral and orchestral tones once more, eventually fading out with the quiet grace that typifies Yanni's musical approach.

5.0 out of 5 stars simply breathtaking, 27 Nov 2001
By A Customer
i dont know what all this fuss is about by some people saying that "If I Could Tell You" is not as great as his "Tribute" or "Live at Acropolis". I think "If I Could Tell you" is a marvelous piece of work by Yanni. agreed that it is not as dramatic as tribute or live at acroplis, but we are forgetting the fact that those were composed for and performed and recorded as a live performance and hence the music more 'loud' and dramatic. on the other hand "If i could tell you" is more like a man show by Yanni. anyway, the music is simply breathtaking....some of the tunes are so 'Yanni-like'...its relaxing, soothing, inspiring.....buy it, you wont regret it

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Work!, 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
When I reviwed the comments for those who bought this CD I just don't believe what they are saying? Acctually this work is one of the best work that has been done by Yanni, if it is not the best! This work just show who this man can preform a music that is related to any region on this world and that is what makes Yanni the most popular and greatest musician on the world.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Departure from Yanni's Last Two Albums, 18 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Potential purchasers of this album should first consider what their style preferences are with regards to Yanni's music. If, like myself, you prefer the dramatic, orchestral output of his previous two offerings 'TRIBUTE' and 'LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS', you might well be more than a little disappointed by the contents here. That said, this is a perfectly reasonable way to spend an hour listening to music, but unlike his other CD's, this one lacks the 'Wow' factor. Perhaps Yanni has just been spoiling us recently and our expectations are just that little bit too high. This studio-based album has some pleasant enough tracks- 'Wishing Well' being the highlight for me. Too many, though, just pass on by without comment. If in doubt, download REAL AUDIO and listen to the samples on offer from Amazon.co.uk. Let's hope that Yanni's next offering will be something on more of a grand scale.
